What do you mean by that Bellman. You, yourself, said you have the Krause products.

It's a good reference guide. Not so as an pricing guide. Much like our 'Red Book'.

Yes, you're very wise and knowledgeable, and the rest of us here -- dealers, published authors, lifelong collectors -- are ignorant bumpkins.

Now, why are you here again?

Just for your background information, there is one other federal government service that is cash flow positive - the State Department's passport office. But they certainly are the exceptions.

I don't mean to butt in on a Gold Kennedy thread, but isn't the Grey and Blue sheets the latest prices and what most dealers use?

It's a play on the interplay of "World Coins", which was your intent to type, and "Word Coins", which is what you did type. Go back and check it. I'll wait here.

I HAVE the Krause products, but I have never USED them for pricing purposes, other than to compare one coin in it relative to another one in it. In general, the prices are, ohh, "optimistic"? Mostly I use it for KM numbers for my database.

Onofrio, I hate to break this to you, but this whole thread proves only that you are ripe to be taken by every con man out there. Your knowledge of numismatic markets is the very epitome of "knows just enough to get himself in trouble". Please be careful. You're on a VERY bad path, buddy.

Yup. But many are good enough to only need to reference it occasionally. The specialists know their markets. They are where ALL guides get their info.

There are five coins shops in my area. If I question a price that they have on a coin, they all go to the Grey Sheet for raw and Blue Sheet for graded prices. Fortunately, unless they paid more than Bid I have a good enough relationship with each of them to normally get the Bid Price or even a little less for the coin I want. I always check to see what the coin is trending for on eBay before i go to the locals. If they are close i give the locals my business.

Another good source is ebay at 3:00am in the morning. I have to take a pill at 3 and while I'm up I check to see if any coins I'm looking for are ending. It's amazing how many night owls end their auction at that time, and they're not just overseas, but sometimes in my time zone or one near mine. A smart Seller ends their auction on Saturday or Sunday at around 7:00pm or so.

You're right. I make typos and and am dyslexic so I screw up every once in a while.

What do you think of George Cuhaj as a numismatic authority?

George is wonderful, but not for pricing so much. We were both honored by Walt Ostromecki as Numismatic Points of Light. So we're "brothers of different mothers" of a sort. George spends more effort staying up to date on world coin issues than anyone I can think of. He does not spend much time on values per se. The world coin market in the U.S. is a little "thin", but improving.

Think about the "production lag time" on those catalogs. The gap from price decision to being in your hands is longer than anyone would wish.

And George isn't with Krause anymore.

You're right! George's name isn't on the digital box cover. The author's name is Thomas Michael, Editor and Market Analyst. Do you know anything about him?
