Andy Warhol was right! Im getting my 15 mins of shame! What a dummy.
I just started collecting Morgans in May and know just enough to be dangerous.
I used to read all the forums daily and have read about fakes but for some reason I let greed get to me on this one.
Anyone see the recent seller with only a feedback of 3 on ebay selling several complete penny albums and a complete 1891-1897 Morgan collection?
I very nearly got up early to score on those but changed my mind at the last minute. Minutes ago ebay sent out a notice of auction cancelled on all of those. I suspect they were stolen if they existed at all. I came close to being suckered on that as well.
Seller wants me to prove the 1893S is a fake. I told him I would pay once he has it in a PCGS slab. Of course then it would be worth more if real. Im starting to suspect he knows its bogus by the defensive tone of his emails.
Im down to 1894, 1893S and 1895 proof for my A-Team Morgan album and I guess as much as I hate slabs I'll have to buy certified coins for those dates and put copies in the album.
Anyway as emBARE-ASSing as this is, its a good lesson for myself and
other dummys like me to look closely at what seems to be a bargain.
Thank goodness someone emailed me instantly as the auction ended and my user name became visable. I read it just as I was getting ready to paypal.
This ebay deal of hiding bidders names on $1000+ auctions is not a great idea.
OK, Im ready for the whipping I deserve from you all, cant be any worse than listening to my wife's "told you this coin deal will ruin you" (

    ITSALLGOLD,

First welcome to the forum. I wish it were under better circumstances.

As a group I think we've determined that this seller is not on the level. Now, the matter at hand. You ain't been totally burned yet my friend.

Lots of shrewd people on this forum so it's time to start putting our heads together and see if we can't save you some money.

I don't think I need to tell you but just in case save all of your contact with this seller. May prove useful.

    1) Welcome
    2) Stay around, you may learn a lot, there are a lot of knowledgeable folks here.
    3) Don't be ashamed, you got lucky on this lot.

The sellers are the ones who should be ashamed.

They take advantage of innocents, like you.
Please, do us a favor & post the lot # from the auction.-- never mind-- I found it.

Just a consideration, before you buy any more coins (obviously you like silver dollars)
think about only buying slabbed coins from the top tier graders (NGC, PCGS, and ANACS).
At least you will be getting what you are paying for.
Another thought, buy a grading guide, and read it.
Next: Locate a local dealer (or three) and go in there, do not buy. Look, ask questions and learn.
If they don't want to talk, move on.
    Good luck.

Actually, that one looks ok to me.
The 3 is slightly elevated and the middle bar looks correct.
The only thing I'd question is if the photo has been altered.
The area around the date looks a little pixelated to me.
They seem to offer a decent return policy though.

WOW! I'm glad you didn't pay. The seller was notified by a slew of people, and he is very aware it is counterfeit. Also, if you ever want an opinion on a coin you are thinking about purchasing, feel free to post pictures here and you'll get several opinions on the coin to help with your decision.

    Zaneman,

Do you think he should just not pay and take the negative. If I'm correct with his current feedback it would be a small hit.

    I'd just take the hit.

You can leave comments on your received feedback, no ?

I think the mark against the seller would be worth it.

BTW, Welcome to the forum ITSALLGOLD !

    welcome to the forum itsallgold!!

I tried to shoot you an email but ebay forbid it since I won't put a credit card on file for them.

Glad you got the message before that loser got your $$$$$'s.

Please make sure you leave feedback for him saying that the coin is indeed a fake so the 2nd chance bidders won't get hit as well.

I tried to reason with the seller only to be belittled and insulted by him without him making ANY effort to be rational. Therefore, I am determined that he very well KNOWS the coin is a fake and is likely the one that faked it.

Congrats on not taking the hit!

That's an unreasonable request. Even if it was real that coin could never get into a PCGS slab because of the damage. You've given him an impossible goal to reach. Make it an ANACS slab since they slab problem coins, but they are good at spotting counterfeits. (Not that it would matter with this coin.)

Something I find interesting about this coin, there is a diagnostic feature for the 1893-S dollar, the "rabbit" in LIBERTY. I notice that the coin has a bad spot or damage (looks like a small punchmark) exactly where the "rabbit" would be.

I take that back, it looks like they got the wrong foot of the R. There is also a small die gouge on the 1893-S dollar above the foot of the T in Liberty. Blowing up the auction coin does not show the gouge.

Here is a picture of LIBERTY from a genuine 93-S that clearly shows the "rabbit" and the die gouge.

    What rabbit?

Look in the left foot of the R in the picture of the genuine above. That thing is a raised feature in the incuse foot of the R and it called a rabbit. I think because the two spikes are the "ears".

I think that I see it but, is it on the bottom of the RIGHT foot? (Right side, facing.)

True, I should should have said "..any reputable grading company so I would know its authentic.."

Its plain I will have to buy slabs to get my last three coins, they are too expensive to take a chance on any other way. Ive learned my lesson. I just hate having a coin imprisoned that way but not much choice when a coin is $3000 +
This Morgan collection was fun while I was buying BU coins at $40-50, BU Carsons for a couple hundred, now otherwise cull quality coins are thousands due to a mint mark. kind of takes the fun out of it but Id like to complete at least one of my three Morgan sets. (As I upgrade coins I move them to a different album) Ive noticed reading population reports from grading companies it would be impossible a build a complete MS grade Morgan set even if I were wealthy (NOT). Amazing how the meltdowns got nearly all of some mintages and few of the others.
Thanks to all for the supportive comments and suggestions.
