Here is an 1883 Shield Nickel that I got at auction a week ago. What do you think it would grade ? Also, does there seem to be any chance of it being an 1883/2 ? I see a little something down there in the bottom of the 3. Thanks for looking.
Thanks, yes I did notice those. I am somewhat particular to die cracks. I just love them, for some reason. I like coins with natural imperfections. I believe there are some die clashes on the reverse, as well. Also some ugly looking red paint near one of them.
Nice coin - but I see nothing to indicate it is 1883/2. It seems to the 2 should always be visible between the last 8 and 3. Still a very nice coin that would fit nicely in my shield collection if you want to donate it.
Actually, I came to find out that was a little hair on the front of the 2x2. Thanks, I didn't think it was, but that bit in the 3 made me wonder. Send me your Shield collection, so I can make sure this coin would fit in nicely.
I have to ask everyone, what things bring this coin to a VF ? I'm not knowledgable on grading these. When comparing it to others on eBay, I assumed it to be around an EF to an AU slider. If someone with the ANA book could lay the grading standards for EF on me, I'd really appreciate it. My guess is that the wear-points are the horizontal and vertical lines of the shield, lines in the middle of the leaves, arrow feathers, and date on the obv. On the rev, I'd guess the stars and 5 would wear. Is this close ? Thank you all for your comments and furthering my education. I will be ordering the ANA grading book, soon.
ANA book says. EF-40 Obverse: Cross lightly worn but well defined and bold. Slight wear shows on horiz. lines of shield. High points of leaves are worn but show all details. Reverse: Numeral and stars are worn but all details are visible.
Trust me - I have just the airtite and the hole for it in the album. I will see if I can get a picture for you later tonight. Then you can see what a nice home it will have.:kewl: As for the grade - I think XF.

LOL@Big Brothers That 1879 is AMAZING ! You DO have some nice pieces there. I'll stick a stamp on little brother and chuck him in the mail. I'm sure he'll make it. He would automatically know where his brothers live, right ?
I haven't made the comparison myself, but have those of you have said it is not an overdate compared it to all five 83/2 overdates?
Yep - I am sure he would know exactly where to go. As for the 83/2 question - I checked the cherry pickers guide and did not see a match. I do not have it in front of me so I can recall how many they listed. You can always check with Howard over at shieldnickels.net( i think that is the address).
I don't have a copy of Cherrypickers, but I would be surprised if they list and picture all five varieties. Howard's site is still the best place for information on the 83/2.
