As long as one is serious and trying to learn, you're right... lots of good people willing to help. On the other hand, you're going to see threads where it may look as if everyone is beating up on the new guy, but is actually because the person is playing games. For whatever reason, this hobby has the ability to attract nonsense like flies to honey. As the old saying goes, it really does take all kinds...

    And of course... post away.

You got that right I've seen so many people who hear on radio or whatever it is that a certain coin is worth a certain amount. Then they start firing away about every coin they find thinking because it's older its worth a ton and no desire to research it or know why or how the error came about.
One of my customers in Pennsylvania got me into them. Ill find out his name I'm sure he was on here. He was long time collector John and president of the Harrisburg Coin Club or Highspire club. He just passed away last year by freak accident but he gave me some old books before.
Anyways. Here is what I think might be a ddo 1960 D. I don't know why I love this year and mint so much but it's 1 of my favorite double dies to look for and 1 I really want for my personal collection.

Ok. I have about 20 of these and this one looks like its doubled on date quite a bit to me. 0422171651.jpg 0422171649c.jpg 14929135610142140698042.jpg 14929136983561123148210.jpg

I can even see the rpm. I see the outline of old D north of this one. Or am I really going crazy. You look at coins all day and you eventually start seeing what you want to see I think. Ha. I do at least.

There does appear to be what's likely minor repunching, yes.

If memory serves me, and he could be so kind as to assist you, I believe @desertgem is also a fan of this date (if wrong, he's certainly welcome to correct me).

This one says doubled die to me. A couple notes: better to use a loupe than iPhone zoom. Never use flash on an iPhone when taking coin shots (find better lighting). Zooming in, with a loupe, is not always a bad thing, but try to avoid going over 25% zoom as the more you zoom, the more the photo is distorted.

I'm using a Lg G5 which has a pretty good camera as far as phones go. Kind of the reason I purchased it. Getting the g6 soon which is even better. Someone needs to create an App for coin collectors that allow you to easily take a picture and label die markers and such. Would make things a lot easier sending labeled pic to someone in some circumstances.

I assumed iPhone, but replace iPhone with LG G5 and same advice goes. :)

Thanks man. Yeah I've been trying to get different pics this morning and I think I need more light and new loupe. Time to go shopping.
First roll I opened this morning had this coin in it. I have been looking for over an hour and it looks like it may be 1942 s ddo. Just trying to decide if its the RPM. The die marks above the BERTY go from south to north west and this coin has exact same characteristics.
Check out this 1942-S 1C Doubled Die Obverse, RD on PCGS CoinFacts!

I never clean coins but it sure would help if I removed some of the dirt next to numbers and letters. I was going to buy a small pick or some kind of tools to get dirt out of edges or is that a bad idea? Do you recommend a safe way to clean them a little without hurting the value ?

First, your link seems to require opening using an app, so in the future it would be wise to post links anyone can easily access.

As for your coin possibly being of the variety in the link, slow it down a little. Instead of worrying about removing dirt or cleaning, ask yourself if there's anything else about the coin that would allow you to remove it from consideration. This is usually the point where someone else feels the need to jump in and answer for you, but hopefully they'll be so kind as to allow you to try to figure this one out on your own (you're already half way there, and once it "clicks" you'll never forget). Also, markers are great and an excellent tool, but don't get ahead of yourself or be overly reliant on them. They're just a step in the process.

How did you get the link on the page? Upload a file? Sorry but technology is not my friend. I'm getting better about it but still lacking. I copied to my clipboard and pasted is possibly why it required app.
The dirt being right where a rpm on a 1960 d was. I tried to move and scratched a good coin. I used a toothpick wood and dulled and didn't quite do the trick so I used dull pocket knife. That was just stupid but you live and learn. I usually don't touch it unless I need to see what's under it.
    Thanks again for the help.

I ended up googling it since trying to cut out the unnecessary parts didn't worth this time. The coin number is the same, so was fairly easy to know it was the correct one. As for what I'd hoped you'd pick up on, it's the mintmark position. Being as they were punched by hand (until 1989 on cents), their positions can vary and is often a fairly simple way to exude certain examples from further consideration.

Rose thorns are often recommended, but there are other things to try first, depending on the coin.

I know I knew that but I seem to forget to put that into consideration when hunting. I will slow down a little bit and go back and check out the double die site one of you recommended for me. Thank you good sir.

It's okay... was just a suggestion meant to hopefully save you some time and hassle.

Learning takes time, but go at a pace you're comfortable with; especially if searching, there's little harm that can come from hurrying things. It's those who jump right in and make fairly substantial (to them) purchases who really need to slow it down. Also, don't be afraid to use junk or nothing-special coins to experiment on. There's always someone appalled at this idea, but there's literally billions of such coins out there, so trust me when I tell you no one will ever know the difference. ;)

Exactly right. The dulled wood toothpick has been my best solution so far for light dirt. I've seen people say ketchup and all this crazy stuff. Tried it once with salt and vinegar and something else i think but that will never happen again. I could tell immediately after it touched that it was a bad idea. Just seen a quarter from the 50s go for over 6k and it looked like a dirty old coin from cup holder but you could see how crisp every thing was. I rarely touch unless no way around it.

Funny thing. I have 500 of that variety if you want 1. I will give you the 2nd cousin discount. Can't beat it.

You should get them attributed by the experts, first, though, because in China that might be right-side-up, because they're at the bottom of the world.
