So this one has an interesting story. I came across this one in the new listings on MA-Shops last night. the listing said it was a Titus denarius Ric 30- a scarce coin. I immediately contacted David to let him know. David responded that in fact the coin was an even rarer coin-Ric 12. He also said that he was fortunate enough to pick one up several years ago. I thought about it and sent an offer to the seller. By this morning the offer had been accepted and I just paid for the coin. Thanks to David for his expertise on these coins. The reverse is what makes this coin interesting. It is a Judea Capta issue that I have never seen before. this will make a great addition to my 12 Caesars set. Take a close look at the portrait on the obverse, you can see the beard of Titus. Post post your coins of Titus. Titus AR Denarius 79 AD Rome, Judaea Capta issue. (3.12 gram, 18 mm). Obv: IMP T CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, Laureate head right) TR POT VIII COS VII Rev: Captive kneeling right before trophy. RIC 12
Congrats on acquiring a rare first issue Titus as Augustus! I love that issue. Your Judaea Capta (RIC 1) and the other two types from the issue, Annona (RIC 2) and Ceres (RIC 3), are some of the hardest denarii of Titus as Augustus to find. All of them are carry-overs from his last issue as Caesar struck under Vespasian.
As you can see from David's post, the attribution has changed once again for this coin. After checking the references David has confirmed that it is RIC 1-the first issue for Titus as Augustus. Thanks to David for his help and expertise on this coin.
I haven't had much of a chance to shop for coins, so you are lucky I didn't see it first. I've been after one of these for some time now. Congrats and I'm glad it went to a good home.
Thanks @Bing I appreciate the comments. In the back of my mind I have been looking for a Judea Capta denarius, but I wanted something a bit more unusual. this fit the bill nicely. I hope another comes along soon for you.
Congratulations, Orfew, on that very interesting addition to your collection. Very nice of David to so kindly lend his assistance and to share his knowledge. Collectors helping collectors! My denarii of Titus: A Judaea Capta as of Titus:
