Saw this little sparkler the other day. Had to have it. Now its mine. This coin is in a PCGS holder, but there is absolutely no doubt that this coin is fully PL. The reverse is absolutely cameo DPL. It is spectacular! Interestingly, when I was doing my research before buying this coin, I noticed that it had sold previously wearing NGC clothes. Any guesses what NGC called it the last time they saw it? The Liberty Quarter eagle, like all Liberty coinage, is available in Prooflike condition. Looking at the NGC census, there are around 260 PL coins designated for the series. Unfortunately, like most PL gold, most of these are in the 58-62 range. Unlike the half eagle I posted a couple of months ago, however, the $2.50 is more widely available in very high grade PL. So, here's my newest Newp. Guess the grade!
I have a LOT of quarter eagles (over a hundred), but don't have any PL. One day I want to pick one up. Did pcgs call it PL? I think I remember seeing somewhere they don't, but NGC does. Nice coin!
You are correct - PCGS only designates PL on Morgans. There are a few exceptions to this, but that's the general rule. The problem with PL gold is that the prices are insane. I was able to pick this up for a reasonable price (strong price for the grade, but a fraction of what a PL designated coin costs).
There is a widespread theory that PCGS coins sell for more. NGC did not actually call this PL (an absolutely ridiculous mistake, which would have been quickly corrected with a simple call to customer service and a designation review), but it did have a CAC sticker. I paid several hundred dollars more for it in the PCGS holder (which is the same grade as NGC), so I guess they were (coincidentally) right. I would prefer it in the NGC holder since they are extremely idiotic and no longer allow PCGS slabs in the registry - but I bought it for the PL premium. It is worth at least 2x what I paid. (I was actually able to use the old NGC number and get it into my Registry set - when it was crossed, the old NGC slab number wasn't de-activated). Both PCGS, NGC, and CAC agreed that this is a premium 64.
