Today, 21-April is the celebrated Birth of Rome, traditionally in 753 BCE. To celebrate, I offer this Denarius from BRUTUS: Roman Republic AR Denarius BRVTVS / AHALA Struck by the famous Marcus Junius Brutus when he was moneyer in 54 BCE Obv: Bust of L. Junius Brutus, the Consul of 509 BC Rev: Bust of C. Servilius Ahala, master of horse, 439 BC. Ref:Sear 398. Crawford 433/2. Junia 1 Ex: From the awesome collection of our Good Man - Warren Esty. Fascinating that the first Consul of the Roman Republic was a Brutus, and one of the Assassins of the Dictator who ushered in the Roman Empire was a Brutus... almost 500 years of Republic... PILE 'EM ON! Any cool coins of Rome!
Here are some of my cool Republican coins. Happy birthday, Roma! ROMA.LVX.MVNDI. = Rome is the light of the world.
Awesome posts EVERYONE! Some GREAT coins! Feel free to post ANY ROMAN coins, we are not just restricted to the Republic! LOL, and KIDS, DOGS, CATS, PETS, are all cool to include! Makes everyone's posts "real" Best, Brian
WOW!!! LOVE the posts!!! What's a birthday without a 'triumph' Roman Republic. L. Rubrius Dossenus, moneyer. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 87 BC. Laureate head right of Jupiter; to left, scepter. Reverse: Empty triumphal chariot right, surmounted by small figure of Victory. Sear 258; Rubria 1; Cr. 348/1; Syd. 705.
The dirty truth is that despite my attempts at keeping my coin collection diversified, thus trying to limit how many Roman coins I buy vs. coins from somewhere else, over half of my coin collection has ended up Roman. I think I have around 60 Roman coins vs 50 or so from other places. Had I not made a conscious effort to limit the amount of Roman coins I buy, I'd probably have 75 or 80 by now.
And the best place to 'party' on a birthday? ---Jupiter's Temple, of course M. Volteius M.f. 78 BC. AR Denarius (3.77 gm). Laureate head of Jupiter right / Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus; thunderbolt in pediment. Crawford 385/1; Sydenham 774; Volteia 1.
The date was mentioned for the first time by Marcus Terentius Varro (116 b.C. - 27 A.D.), that, according with astrological calculations of his friend Lucius Taruntius Firmanus, decided that Romulus founded Rome on April 21st, 753 b.C. Nero, dupondius, Goddess Roma seated on back. Happy birthday Roma
