I'm trying to convince my parents to split a 1909 s vdb cent with me (or just buy one for me!) does anyone have a graph showing how much the coin was worth in five year intervals from 1910 to 2005. If you dont have exactly that, if anyone could give me a website that shows how much the value of that cent has increased over the years would be greatly appreciated!!!

    thanks

Lets see.....do you think you could put back $10 a week? Ok...lets make it $20! Now....if you put back $20/week for about a year that is $1120! That is a NICE 1909-S VDB!!! Now on some weeks you might be able to set back $30-$50 or more...and some weeks none at all....but the trick is to do it and NOT pull anything out of it till you buy the coin. I would suggest buying rolls of quarters or such and then just putting them into a box or something in your room!

Exactly, thats how alot of guys with limited resources buy their coins. You'll be amazed at how fast your collection grows just by saving a little each week and buying as you get enough for what you want. Next year at this time you'll be posting a picture of your 09-s vdb for us to see.

If you want the Red Book prices, and I have all of them, here is a sample:
    1947 1st Edition Page 82 Find = $8.00, Unc = $15.00
    1972 25th Edition Page 83 Good = $97.50, VG = $110.00, Fine = $120.00, VF = $130.00, EF = $145.00, Unc = $200.00
    1990 43rd Edition Page 88, G-4 = $225.00, VG-8 = $25.00, F-12 = $285.00, VF-20 = #325.00,
    EF-40 = $325.00, MS-60 = $475.00, MS-63 = $650.00
If you have a copy of the 2008 Edition, you would see the prices are up a little since those days.
I go to lots of coin shows and thoes MS grades are into the many thousands now.
Imagine if you had known in 1947 what today that coin would bring. I was there and just didn't know. Probably threw some in wishing wells at the time.

This web site wouldn't let me correct my last reply. The 1990 prices. The $25 should be $250.00

It all goes to rarity, low mintage, survival numbers, and market demand...eveything this coin offers.

That is why you should try your best to acquire "keys" as quickly as possible over "commons". I never been hurt with this advice. I just wish I listened to it many years ago.

    keep it certified

Good luck in obtaining an S VDB before you buy one learn about the different coin grading services. Understand that it is an often counterfited coin and maybe even learn about the counterfit ones. What they look like ect. But always stick to certified KEY dates graded by the most reputable grading services and you wont go wrong

    My advise
Spend the $25 and buy the Lincoln Cent book by David Lange, I have one around here somewhere, it is priceless and a great source of info. Less than a circulated semi key in cost / more valuble than a 65-Red in knowledge.

Sort of agree and a little disagree. The key coins in any set are usually available at coin shows, the internet, ebay, etc. However, some coins that are not necessarily keys are more elusive. I've spent years looking for a MS-62 or higher 1920D Lincoln Cent. Oddly enough many dealers I know just could not find one. On the internet none of that grade were there. Coin stores also, nothing. Finally after years two dealers found some for me at the same time. Both just gave them to me free. The moral of the story is some coins are just not there although not a key.
Oddly enough some so called keys are everywhere. The 31S Lincoln For example in MS grades are so common I would think they would be at Walmart.
