Let's be real, this is a "collectors coin", not a circulating coin. The mint, if limited edition, should limit the initial sales. That way, the collector can have an opportunity to own one. The mint does know what's going on, they just don't care. They were tasked ( their job ) to produce, and distribute 75000 S mint SAEs for the congratulations sets. They did their job. Probably got a pat on the back, for job well done. Just wait until the population doubles, or more, later in the year.

I don't want to get polical but, I'm happy where I'm at
The limited edition silver proof set, right Mike? To tell the truth, I just don't need all of the redundant pieces or the extra cost.

What do those silver medals that the mint made last year (and sold out in sixty seconds devil.gif ) go for today?

[edit] Cripes, don't answer that.........I just looked. But the prices are falling. Hopefully the same will happen with the congrats set. :)

I think it will. I also think that years down the road prices will plummet.

Reminiscent of the 1999 Silver Proof Sets, once the people who actually want one have one, the prices will settle. Usually way down.

Demand is a funny thing. As long as there's a faction that continues to want an item and they continue to pursue it, then prices remain artificially high. Once the distribution matches the demand, there is often little excess demand and often, it becomes apparent that there are more than the market actually wanted.

Quite right on that one........if only I had waited a few months longer (instead of pulling the trigger on one when I did) I could have saved a few bucks.

Almost certainly will. There aren't enough people that have to have one from every single packaging offering to sustain the Congratulations set once the next offering hits. 70s aren't a rarity for them either, so really being first to market is what is driving the demand the most right now

I take a bit of exception to this one. It is true that the Mint needs to sell product, but just like entertainers some control over ticket scalpers provides fans a fair chance at a ticket at a reasonable price.

If this quote were true then the Mint would never place household limits on products or just wholesale them to dealers and brokers. But we have all seen them place order limits of one or two coins on issues.

The brokers and wholesalers have a lock on bullion sales, the collector specific issues need to be sold in a way that the intended audience has a fair chance at the product. If the collectors do not gobble them all up then the limit can come off.

They did. Everyone could have been logged on just before they went on sale with the CC info entered and ready to check out in under a minute. If it wasn't fair no collector would have gotten one

By the way, the mintage on the 1995-W was 30,125 so there was a rarity factor that is greater than this one. But the same issue of not making it available except in a set limited most collectors. The 2017-S mintage will be greater but with gold rising the set coins will not be a great boost to the available numbers. Most collectors cannot lay out $2,000+ to acquire an ASE they could have purchased for less than $100.

Then there are the TPGs. How strict will the grading be? They can create a real shortage that could have an impact on the dealers. No matter how you slice it, it could have been done better. As always in life there is what you do, and then how you do it. Both are important.

No it didn't for the 2017. The set was the price a proof would have been anyway basically.

This should in no way shape or form be compared to the 95-W.

Huh? There are no gold coins with the 2017

Already been answered, there is no shortage of 70s here.

I think the later release set is the limited edition silver proof set, not the gold. Will be issued for less than what the S sells for now I'm sure, plus a few extra coins that we all want bad. ;)

Sales numbers have been posted. As of 4/16/2017, the 2017 Congratulations Set stands at 74,497. I guess this is a positive sign my backorder will still be fulfilled.

On another note, the 2017 gold liberty stands at 17,704...

@green18 Now Ken, this 2017 S proof ASE will certainly drop in price but do we really want it to drop below issue price? ;)

Well I thought all this might be going no where and then I just read that Prince William and Lady Gaga are working together to promote mental health awareness. So all this has had a positive impact on the world.
