At 7, the state quarters first came out and I collected those. 14 is when I seriously started with my first coin purchase (a 2006 ASE). And at 19 is when I began to collect ancients. I only collect ancient and medieval coins now (tomorrow marks my 6th year collecting them).
I started at about the age of 13 but stopped after 3 ancients due to a complete lack of stock by local dealers. Took ancients up again about 45 years later after a trip to europe and haven't looked back since.
Lincoln cents in the 4th or 5th grade. I had $20 in rolls and took them to the bank as often as the teller would exchange them. First ancient, Galienus / Stag in the 8th grade. I went to a coin show in the Peabody in Memphis. My Latin teacher said it was probably fake and could not translate it. Second ancient coin in 2004, after both my children graduated from college. I have done my best to make up for lost time.
I started with US and modern world at about age 6 or 7, dropped out when I was around 11-12. Got back in at age 19, then started with ancients at age 20 because my local coin store (near the college campus) acquired a bunch of cleaned but unidentified "junk box" ancients, and the combination of historical coolness and low price was very appealing to a broke college student who was already used to doing a lot of research .
I started collecting coins at about 14 in 1975 and about 2 years for ancients and medieval coins. I guess I'm an old guy like a couple of others on the forum. I'm glad some of you younger people are taking up the hobby. I would hate to see coin collecting go the same route as stamps.
I started at age 7.....must say H.S. and college were not collecting years . Wine, women and song...kept me busy and in trouble . However even though I wasn't actually collecting during those years I kept my childhood collection in tack. And would squirrel away any silver that I came across . For the last 25 years I've been very active , as well as changing direction a few times. But no matter what I've always enjoyed this hobby. I honestly can't say that any other interest as in a hobby has sustained the test of time. I will be a collector till the end....I've made some mistakes and made some very neat finds and picks. The passion for this hobby is only trumped by seeing a YN walk into a show. Especially when it's shared with their parents. Flash backs of a different time , and great memories .
About 9 for coins, 13 for ancients (just Roman for decades, I expanded my scope only in the last few years).
