I stumbled across this 1951 Irish 20 pound note on ebay, i can't seem to find any other auction record for one. Its a P. 60b, and ive seen a couple of other past sales for p. 60b notes but none for this date. Are any other examples known to exist? The auction listing is here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=182523747608
I see a pretty heavily circulated note - for $1200 I'd want one in much better shape. That date is later than the 1928 series also, now some of those can be rare.
It already has a bid on it and it doesn't end until tomorrow afternoon, it must be worth at least $1200 after all
Of course it is, same topic got posted by a new user at the old forum. Shills suck, wherever you find them...
As a British collector I find the price to be quite mad. It is not a heavily collected series, and the lower denominations do just as well for an example of the design at much lower prices, and the exact date is unlikely to be all that important either. Add in the condition problems and I'd see it at about a tenth of the asking price, or the amount the seller is asking to ship the note to Britain, $160(?) Rare does not always equal valuable, someone must really seriously want it to bid that price.
I smell a shilling. I collect Irish notes an' that price is stark raving mad. The only way the price would go that high really is a 100 Quid, earlier and maybe one of the consolidated banks. Central Bank issues are actually fairly common.
eBay is filled with chancers looking to take advantage of newbies or impulse buyers. The market is quite strong for Irish banknotes and prices are steadily rising. Anomalies do exist for scarce signature combinations, so it is essential that you have a specialist catalogue to hand when bidding. That said, $160 postage sends a strong message re the seller's credentials !
