Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures here, Bill. I've been looking forward to seeing them. I like them all, but the Whitmore piece is probably the most interesting to me. We went around on the Waters / Whitmore relationship a while ago, and it's nice to see the coin with their names and Millbury and 1825. Tons of history on this one, especially for those who are into the early gunsmiths. The Bentley counterstamp interests me too, as I researched him a number of years ago. The Wise stamp is interesting...not sure what the purpose of the hole is. I assume the small square stamp is his touchmark, but I can't make out any of the details. You know I like the Philly issues, so if you ever need someone to "watch over it", I'll be happy to do so <lol > Cheers, Bruce
You've got good taste, Bruce. I paid almost as much for the Waters c/s as I did for all the others shown. Love at first sight, it was for me. I've been pondering the possibility that the holed, "Wise" c/s was once attached to something, like his silversmith toolbox, perhaps? He seems to have bounced around, working with various Philly smiths for over two decades. Another possibility that comes to mind is that the coin may have been a tool of sorts. Then again, it may have been attached to a watch fob or other jewelry piece - something akin to a personal ID, like a masonic cent was used. Like you, I was unable to decipher that touchmark. There's an authoritative book out on Philly silversmiths. An acquaintance of mine knows the author and is planning to show her a pic of this piece. I'm hoping that she can provide some info on Mr. Wise. When the time comes, you're at the head of the line on my Philly counterstamps. I have around eighty pieces attributed to that town and about as many that may yet be so attributed. Cheerio, Bill
Is everyone ready for another batch of military trade tokens? I'm going to go easy and just put a couple out there. Charleston AFB, SC; clay, red, 38mm, SC61 unlisted in Cunningham This chip was tentatively attributed, by me, to Charleston. It is unlisted in Cunningham. Numismatist John Kallman authored a guide to these chips and attributed it to Charleston AFB. I didn't know this when I bought it. The collector I purchased it from was liquidating his collection because his kids were not interested in it but he thought it was from Charleston. The token above confirms that Charleston AFB abbreviated their name at one time as CHAS. I haven't looked up this token in my reference book yet...but I wanted to get this out tonight. And gosh, I really need to get my coin photography set up going! I have so many tokens that need good photos.
I was stationed at Charleston Naval base. I used to see Delta wings from the AFB buzzing around all the time.

I didn't know there was a book on Philly silversmiths, Bill. I wouldn't mind picking up a copy if any are around. Although I've disposed of most of my numismatic library over the years, that might be one I'd add to it. I would think there's at least 200 issuers from Philly, so having 80 or so in your collection is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations! Bruce

That's a beautiful medal, alurid. Are there any edge markings, if it's plain, or does it have a reeded edge? Bruce
Have in hand now, but still can't give better pics yet. The high relief on the obverse is incredible. Still available for $15 at RELENTLESSDEFENDER.COM. "not for profit." Sellers pic. Still don't do it justice. It's incredible. And for good cause.
One of these sold on ebay (holed) 4 $175 Purchased the lot for $20. Now i just need to find a good luck token collector that wants to pay waaaaaaaaay under what the ebay example sold for. Hmmmmmm pm me
Swastica stuff seems to command a premium. Not really sure why, best I figure is that it predates the U.S. involvement in WWII. That heart shaped token is very cool.
"Don't Worry Club" tokens are common but this one is unusual as it is close to uncirculated. Don't Worry Club token - Kline Clothing, Los Angeles, California The Kline Clothing Company was a Los Angeles men's clothes store chain which operated in the 1920's to 1930's.
