I just wonder how long it will take SGS to topple PCGS. They have so much to offer!

This is the first currency I've seen slabbed by them and just guess who the seller is. Come on GUESS!

Okay, I knew they were starting to slab currency as well. Actually the note does look pretty nice and (get this) may actually be correctly graded. Of course you can still buy fresh packs of silver certificates so there are a lot of CU63 notes to be had.

What gets me is the grading categories offered for non-CU notes.

    "Currency Grading
Bills which receive UNC (60) or above will receive letter and number grades,
and below that bills will be designated as either AU (Almost Uncirculated),
    FN (Fine), or GD (Good)."

I know this might irritate some people but bear with me. Die hard currency collectors do not call them "bills". They are notes and it would seem that a reputable grading company would refer to them as same.
Not CU so it gets AU, FN or GD. Scuse me - what happened to EF, VF, VG etc. These grades occur in currency as well.

Why did I post this in Coin Chat? Well, for starters it will most likely get more hits. Now here's a coin part from their site.

"We are now Certifying and Authenticating some different Circulated-type coins.
These coins, being circulated, would not benefit from being graded, but would
benefit from being certified. With SGS you know it's Authentic."

WOW, they will now Authenticate SOME coins as being real without assigning a grade? So if I send in a G4 large cent for example and even they can't give it an MS60 at least they'll charge me to say it's really a large cent.

Man, these guys just plain ROCK!

    You`re KIDDING, right???

They offer coins so overgraded in order fool the newbie and the great unwashed that have NO CLUE about grading.

Just for instance.... Many Morgan Dollars graded MS67 and MS68 by SGS have none known over a period of DECADES in the grade SGS (The biggest Joke Grading Service) that SGS has assigned. We all have heard of the Newbies coming here to complain about their SGS MS 70 coins grading like AU 55 or worse....... It is an old, but sorry story about abon.com and the so called SGS (I grade my own coins) grading service....

    Bzcollektor,

    Of course I'm kidding!

SGS is TOTAL GARBAGE! If I saw an SGS MS65 Morgan dollar I would offer 95 cents just to crack it out of the slab an sell it as junk silver.

Sooooo.... if I have a 1909SVDB that PCGS would slab at only AU53 it's really not worth anything?

Might have to email SGS about that one but they already have a strong dislike for me.

    I'm good with that though.

It's amazing .. they even slabbed & labeled the PLAIN 06 Eagles as 2006 W Eagles.. when I questionned them they said 'well, it's basically true as they are minted at Westpoint... so I guess ... if things are basically kinda somewhat sorta close to being true that's good enough. They rank right up there with GEC.

sorry, crude I know, but that's the first thought that popped in my head after reading your comment about it being kinda sorta the truth.

Not defending them in the least, but they are minted at West Point.

:hail: I'm glad someone else puts GEC down there with SGS. They are both among the more sucessful self grading, over grading ripoffs around. In my own opinion.

I have a few GEC slabbers in my bargain bin catagory, I tell folks to " Ignore that silly company's PR-70 " and grade for themselves

As well you should be scared....

abon.com and SGS is an old story here...

There is a reason that SGS "certified" coins sell for 1/10 the value of PCGS,NGC ANACS, and yes even ICG.
Mostly I am talking about Higher value older coins.

It comes into play with all the newer MS and PF coins by SGS as well......

There are also another 20 or more "NO NAME" so-called TPG grading "services" everyone should stay away from.

Some of us know this because we have been around, but many of you`s (NJ thang), lol) do not.

I am always willing to speak the truth, and I defy abon.com and their "SGS" to sue me for any opinions I make about them...

    Hey,

    I'm just glad I didn't give you a Grabber!

I too will continue to expose SGS for what they really are.

Now that a few people, including yourself and myself, have been "scared" by the possibility of SGS "authenticating coins" another question arises.

Let's say I send in a 1914-D Lincoln. They'll just tell me if it's real? Damn, I thought that coin would be worth more with an actual grade.
Are they saying they aren't QUALIFIED to really grade? (We all know the answer).

I need to find an altered 44-D and see if SGS would call it genuine 14-D.

I have no need for authenication, as I only buy really pretty circulated coins, and normally nothing over $300...and anyone can spot a fake of a circulated coin a mile off. With UNC coins it is much harder.
