I think I would go with no feedback. Why make a fuss over a $5 purchase - they guy is a nasty idiot to say what he said to you, but for $5. ......... eh!

I think this is the way I'd go with it. The OP is not even on his native continent, much less his native country, and social norms are not necessarily the same there. For instance, collectors in Europe are all o_O at our dependence on TPG's.... :)

Unbelievable.... how nice it must be to be an expert and/or perfect in everything imaginable; lucky people, you are. The guy, at least from outward appearances, is a very new seller, so what a wonderful opportunity to show him how petty and vindictive this hobby/business can be instead of trying to show the very decency each and every one of us would hope for if new, but it's always so fun to stick it to the other guy, right? The sheer amount of pettiness shown on this forum never ceases to amaze even though there is not one, not ONE person here who hasn't made a poor choice/decision, and is particularly true when they were new to this.

That FACT here (and no disrespect to the OP is intended) is that the coins in question are junk level, and even the OP himself admitted as much. The seller quite certainly knows this as well, and it shows in their chosen shipping method. Even so, was it a wise choice? No, but there are better ways to approach this than lowering oneself to the point of being well beneath the unprofessional response. The simple and obvious reality is that if he continues down this path, particularly if with more collectible level coins, sooner or later and right or wrong, he'll pay the price for it. Giving a neg or even just a neutral now will be a hell of a lot more than the little slap it is for many sellers, but will destroy his ability to sell and/or at the very least achieve fair prices. Is this what you people want, and does he really deserve this for a less than ideal response?

Perhaps Peter should consider renaming the forum. Based on threads like this, a few very fitting choices come to mind...

  5. The seller only has 7 feedbacks. I would give no formal feedback but would message him again and let him know how you feel so this doesn't happen again as it will someday hurt his business.

In my opinion the seller's flippant reply is the sore point.

I've found that negative feedback can cause more problems than it is worth. No feedback and a memo to self never to do business with this person again. My $5 is better spent elsewhere.

I don't actually see the sellers response just a transcription from OP of what the seller said? I would leave positive feedback if it was me, I can clearly tell the coins in the listing are essentially junk bin condition, except for the silver value of the war nickels of course. So as long as I got what I paid for I wouldn't care, I mean it's a $5 transaction and you received the coins pictured.

The buyer received $8 in just silver value. Some people would not be happy if you gave them the coins for free.

The buyer received coins with tape on them and was responded to very rudely when he questioned the seller on it. One might call that poor customer service.

I appreciate everyone's input. To clarify, this was a bid that I won, not a buy it now. I was not the only bidder, and my bid was higher than what I won it for. I agree that this is small potatoes, but imagine you won something you bid on for less than you thought you would and then it showed up at your doorstep with tape on it.

I had a handful of post Soviet coins from the ex-USSR arrive from Lithuania more than a few years ago that were taped to aluminium foil. I didn't care for it and let the seller know. He still sells, first from Lithuania, then South Africa and now from someplace called North Carolina - and I believe he packages better.

OTOH I have received some very cleverly packaged Tsarist Russian coins from someone in Kirov, Russia that were carefully wrapped in paper, then placed in cutouts in cardboard so that the postal thieves had no idea there were rare coins in the envelope. I have used a similar means to mail coins, inspired by a fellow collector in Mother Russia.

FYI, I don't have acetone available because I'm actually in Germany and they're very much for protecting the environment. Lord knows how much I'd have to pay for a bottle here (assuming it's available to me anyhow). The tape isn't such a big deal as I didn't consider any of the coins UNC, but if I were to go strictly off his own description, he shouldn't have taped the coins. When I asked why he did it and told him a coin is no longer UNC when it is taped, he got hostile. Granted, my German isn't perfect, ask @micbraun but I don't feel my questioning was out of line. In the end, I think I might actually leave positive feedback and jokingly recommend he use less tape.

The seller should be hung and thrown off ebay.

Just tell the seller, "das ist nein gut fur mich" and besides "ein bier bitte" that would be the extent of mein Deutsch.

Tape is bad for the coin environment. Staples are a no no too.

This makes no sense... how can you throw someone who is hanging? They'll just fly back again and hit you.

Are you sure about that, or are you making an assumption? You know, kind of like the seller very well may have made an assumption that his chosen shipping method was acceptable. Honest question.

The fact is tape in no way automatically renders a coin circulated, just as actually being in circulation does not automatically mean a coin's grade is lowered into the circulated range. A coin's history is meaningless simply because we rarely know it; all that matters when it comes to a grade is what's in front of your eyes at that very moment. This isn't to say that what you said couldn't be the case, but only that as a blanket statement, it's far from absolute or unquestionable fact.
