Caliph al-Rashid, on whose court the tales of "One Thousand and One Nights" took place. His palace in Baghdad was the epitome of oriental splendor and lavish sumptuousness.Emperor Charlemagne, al-Rashids counterpart in faraway Europe, could only dream of such luxury. Charles maintained diplomatic relations with al-Rashid and was impressed by the presents the Caliph sent him, one of which was an Indian Elephant named Abul Abbas. Charlemagne took Abul Abbas with him on his travels throughout Germany as fitting for a great prince to have exotic animals as proof of his far reaching contacts. Abul, sadly, was not cut out for the vagrant life, as he died within only a few years of traveling with the emperor. Sweet coin @gregarious . I have one of his too! What coincidence. Though it appears the lettering on mine is different a little. Maybe different dates in his reign? I got mine from NGC and I have tow reference somewhere...I just don't remember where now.
This is an area I know nothing about, but these are cool and impressive coins. I'm looking for a nice high grade example to have stabbed (I know how wrong that is) for a project I am working on.
yup, the reverse is different, but the obverse look the same, i got mine several years ago, i noticed the paper i downloaded for it then isn't the same reverse i have now, it's a little different.
