Actually, if I remember correctly, you didn't pay too much at all on this piece. Just return it and get your money back.........or maybe consider keeping it as an example of a really good fake.
Scorched earth on this seller. $25 for a random (fake) Morgan dollar means they have a big supply of these and this was no accident. SNAD, do not return it, report to eBay, PayPal, out the seller here so we can look at their sales and report the fakes.
I've had a few PO1 coins cross my desk, but haven't weighed any. I'll have to do this next time I get my hands on one, but I'm guessing it would weigh around 25 grams.
By all means John, weigh any and all low grade examples, say from F down, and report the weights. I'm betting a lot of folks will be surprised by the results.
Love and got into Morgan's for the reason as OP, the weight and age of the coins. I'm very new to coin collecting and am not even close to an expert but IMO it is a fake. Took a few minutes picking out random 1878s and the OPs coins (OP on left) lettering, esp in UNUM, is too fat/not as well defined as others. Also the head piece dimple at top and bottom looks off (maybe due to 8 tails?)
Was just thinking and not saying OP is a counterfeiter but think about it. Someone makes a coin like this and throws it up for us to pick apart/see what we notice most and goes back to correct the mistakes the average collector picks out. Sites like this are probably a counterfeiters dream come true
I'm really surprised the manufacturer didn't shoot for proper weight with an example as close as this one is. And yes, a link to the original auction please.
Well...I am actually a high school English teacher with a 6 year old son who has a newfound interest in coin collecting, so not a counterfeiter at all. While my son is mostly interested in anything he can come across with a shred of silver (he fancies himself a treasure hunter so imagine the excitement when I found two silver dimes in the coinstar machine yesterday) I have a little more disposable income, so I am supplementing his toothfairy money purchases with some more substantial pieces out of my own pocket as a longer term investment. Here's a link to the original auction I get that you are trying to be diligent but you might have been a bit better served to contact me offline rather than casting aspersions so freely and openly.
Given how often people counterfeit Morgans, many people are instantly suspicious. Sorry for the bad introduction to CoinTalk, but this is definitely a diverse community that is generally helpful and friendly. Speaking of those silver dimes - there's a thread here called "Reject tube & coinstar finds":https://www.cointalk.com/threads/reject-tube-coinstar-finds.201092/page-80#post-2673017 Silver coins are a good investment, especially if they are popular United States issues. Precious metals go up and down like roller coasters but the popularity of old US silver issues can only go up.
ummmm "Was just thinking and not saying OP is a counterfeiter but think about it..." This post simply got me thinking and I think I made it pretty clear I wasn't casting aspersions on you but.
The seller is a bit odd, he's been a member since 2011 but only has 164 feedback rating. They are all positive, but it's still odd for such an old member to have been inactive for so long. The price is about right if it as described, a random year XF coin. I would highly recommend contacting eBay (not the seller), and reporting the counterfeit coin. Ebay will refund your money, and you will get the keep the coin: as a curiosity ONLY! It will be a good reference for later purchases to make sure you're not getting duped.
You do have a great point. I once asked on a thread somewhere how to tell the difference between counterfeit and genuine *something* and nobody would reply on-thread for fear of helping out counterfeiters get better at their job.
Also curious that he make the bidding private so you cannot see who bid and feedback for all recent sales are private so that you cannot see the auctions.
I misread your tone then and apologize for accusing you of accusing me of impropriety. This has been an exciting learning experience and I look forward to having it fully resolved.
That happened to me, but when I cut and pasted the link it worked. It seems like he must have hidden the actual link and redirected it inadvertently. That happens to me when I copy a link from my work e-mail reader. If you hover over it you will see what I mean. BTW, Mark, you may want to edit the link as it references your place of employment.
The auction number is embedded in the link anyways. http://www.ebay.com/itm/XF-Conditio...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 All his selling Feedback in the last six months, many early Feedbacks for items under ten cents, private auctions. Greasy account from the very start.
