if I had a 41 nickel that I thought had been struck on stock for the 42's...would it possible for some of that stock to find it's way into being used with 41's? is there any way I can tell? I was going to try and upload photos but it would not show what I see. it has that "color" and that "feel" as you rub your thumb on it. hard to explain. so...hypothetically speaking...is it possible?
They didn't start striking silver nickels until well into 1942, so I doubt there were even any experimental planchets floating around in 1941. So, unless it had something to do with those time-travel experiments I keep hearing about, no. I've seen plenty of cupronickel Jeffersons that have that "color". It usually indicates a war nickel, but not always.
I had thought of the time travel theory but passed it off. why would someone waste that on a 1 year difference. I have a couple weird things. penny struck on nickel planchet. think paddy had one that was a quarter struck on Eisenhower planchet? and I found a crazy henning nickel. so whether it was accidental or done intentionally...would any silver stock have been at the mint while the 41's were being produced?
I think that the only way, that a silver 41' could happen, is if a 41 die was used in 42'. This however is unlikely. Congress didn't authorize the mint until March of 42'.
