Got a new dealer in town so stopped by to see him today. Not only is he a SUPER nice guy, but his prices are ROCK BOTTOM. Bought 4 unsearched rolls of wheaties off of him today at face value. A roll of buffalos at 2.50 and 3 walking liberty halves (each of which is xf or better) for 75 cent each. Then, as I pay him, I find out he gives his change in pre 60's money. hahaha EDIT: forgot to tell ya.....the 45 cent he owed me back in change, 4 mercs and a buffalo. 2 two dollar bills both 1953 and CRISP and 6 1 dollar silver certificates..1957, 1957b, 1957, 1935e x 2 I like my new dealer haha. Anyhow, off to search through my wheaties. Jasn P.S. for those of you that have been following my struggles to find NON 2007 change around here.....I hit a stroke of luck....walked into 1st state bank about 2 blocks from where I live and an ex girlfriend of mine started working there TODAY!!! haha lucky me, we are still on good terms and I now have a source for customer rolled coins and she's keeping eye out for rarities for me. SCORE! It's been a good day.
Don't expect that for long! He just getting you to come back. If did this a lot he would be out of biusness in 3 days.
you must of stepped into a time vortex into the past or He must get his merchandise by traveling into his time machine
haha you should have seen his safe. It's loaded with his "change". Plus this guy is obviously loaded. It's a small shop and he had just about every key lincoln I've ever wanted hahaha. 3 1914D's showing (I'll get the grades when I go back they were PCGS cert). 2 1955 DDO's 1 non graded but probably F+ (he said he bought it the other day off a guy for 100 bucks. The guy brought it in and said that's what he wanted for it.) and one graded XF, 2 09s vdb's graded XF and F. His wall behind his desk has a (roughly) 10 x 10 frame full of toned Morgans. He had 6 no edge lettering Adams dollars all UNC. readying them for grading. 4 also has 4 shelves of trade dollars and a cabinet beside his monster safe full of St. Gaudens Gold. Might not be too much for those of you in bigger cities haha...but for here....this guy is officially the king of coins in the area. Jasn. P.S. I wonder what kind of security system he has.....hmmmm hahahahah
The coins and such he gave me back in change isn't worth much more than face value...I just thought it was neat how he gave my change back. Coins are all non key date and pretty rough. But still, it's neat. Jasn
I meant to get his card, but I forgot. I'll ask him tomorrow when I go back. He said he deals 95% in high grade PCGS stuff. His general retail is very well priced. A very nice shop for someone who has to collect on a tight budget. I'm gonna go get 10 bucks of wheaties tomorrow. I may ask him if he wants to join the forum. I do know he said he stays off of ebay because of the people selling the junk graded by the s*** grading services. He may have a site though. Either way, I like him a lot. Beats the hell out of the other crap dealers in town.
This sounds like it would be a great place for YN's also. Which might be the point... get people started in the hobby and move up gradually.
How come the Wall Street Journal hasn't headlined the drop in silver prices that brought the melt value of mercs to only 10¢?
Probably pretty standard if not high. He told me he only really deals in high end stuff. The stuff that he retails is nothing really TOO uncommon. He has some of his high end stuff displayed but not priced. His retail makes up a very small part of his shop. He doesn't even sell supplies (2x2's and such) Jasn
I only know of 2 coin stores in my area. the cheapest thing in the one is a big bin of buffalo and V nickles. All of them are .20-2.00. The other has indian head cents a $1.00 a piece. I also love the second one because they have binders with modern coins organized by date/mintmark. That helps alot for my whitman folders. (Still no 1968-d quarter!) Anyways, the first coin store gave me a kenedy half (non silver) SBA, and a washington dollar. They arent worth much over face value if at all.
Yea that's the part that kinda sucks about this guy. He's not really there for retail sales as much as high end sales. He has no low grade Indians AT ALL and none of those oh so nice binders of 2x2'ed coins. He also had no v nickels in bulk (low grade) Jasn
I wish I could find a dealer like that, Theres one pretty good dealer that lives within the 10 mile radius of my house. The first time I went there he gave me great deals on everything. 1921 d au 50 for $11.50 rolls of unsearched wheats for $2.00 a piece Then he had this basket of foreighn coins, each was .10 cents, or 12 for $1.00, I found 8 indian head cents that had somehow slipped into there, and a couple of 1800's english half cent. I went yesterday and he was trying to charge me 25.00 for an 1874 seated liberty dime in ag-3 condition. Whatever, I got some great deals from him at first, I guess thats just how most dealers work. Charge 5 dollars less than retail value when they first come in, then charge more that retail value once you like the dealer.
Yea, I hope this guy doesn't turn out that way. I use to have an awesome dealer in my old hometown that was the exact opposite. He was psychotically a**h***ish the first few weeks that I went in there....then he gradually became like a granddad to me haha. Went to his funeral when he died. It sucked. Jasn
Again, tell us the dealer. He obviously does this for good will and to get you to spread the word about his shop. I'm assuming if you stopped in there every night on the way home from work, you would stop getting mercury dimes for change, but his initial generosity has gotten you fired up and telling others about the shop. Word of mouth advertising is much cheaper and effective than flyers and valpak coupons that everyone throws away. The word of mouth he hopes to get out of your increased interest is probably worth more than the couple bucks in junk silver he gave you. So again, tell us where the shop is. (....please....)
I figure about the same. He's most likely doing this as a promotional sort of thing to get you and your friends to come back to his shop. I have never known a coin dealer to freely give you silver coins in change. The most I ever got was at a coin show once, one of the dealers gave me a 1976 $2 dollar bill in my change...wow. I was a very frequent visitor of a certain coin dealer years ago who I bought from and spent alot of money over the course of 15 years. Sure, he'd give me a break on some of his prices but never gave me anything worth over face in my change. We became very good friends and remained so up until he passed.
if he keeps that up, he'l go out of business. my coin dealer SOMETIMES gives me uncirculated bicentinals or state quarters. you lucky.:goofer:
