Yeah you said that. But, a bit earlier when Dave said this - You quoted him and responded with - And unless I'm mistaken when one says ditto it means you agree that acetone removes toning. That is the part I was referring to when I said you're gonna have to show me. Acetone does not remove toning - period, end of story. Yes, acetone may well remove some organic substances or films that have settled on a coin over time due to environmental exposure causing the toning to appear darker in color. Because that is something that is "on" the coin. But it will absolutely not remove the toning itself for toning is literally "in" the coin, not "on" it.
Acetone removes a lot of things from the coin. We're debating the fact that a lot of what is considered toning actually isn't--it is an accumulation of gunk and other organic and inorganic material on a coin, and it can appear as toning. I rarely dip coins, but it is resolved for the purposes of this experiment, I will not use acetone, but I will use jewel luster, which will definitely remove toning. I will do half of one of the two coins--probably the upper half of the 1880s, unless somebody has a better idea. I am open to suggestions.
Use jewel luster if you like. I wouldn't. I have my own thiourea based concoction, but I recognize not everybody wants to mess with mixing chemicals. I have never used any commercial dip to "dip" coins, but that's just me. I also never had one rejected for a straight grade - proof or regular strike. We former "darkroom rats" are pretty dangerous like that.
If I use Jewel Luster, it would be well- diluted, and an extremely quick dip. I am not a coin dipper, despite my many years of collecting Morgan's, as I like toning. So, dipping is fairly new to me. I tend just to avoid buying coins where I don't like the toning, as I have been a toner collector for over 25 years.
"Ditto" for his entire post was my error. Acetone does not remove toning; however IT CAN LIGHTEN ITS COLOR. We can argue what the color that lightened is but that does not change anything.
Personally, I hope Morgandude's coin ends up with awesome toning. Then everybody will start putting coins outside to tone and the world will turn into real life Super Mario Bros.
OMG...I was rinsing a mercury dime in the bathroom sink a couple of years ago when it slipped and went down the drin. If it is still in the trap, I wonder what it looks like.
A friend of mine used to twist Pvc into all weird shapes. And Glue a can to the bottom for good stability.
