This is a raised 'stripe' across the D to the head. I don't think it's a clash. Big die gouge or crack?
It looks like a die crack to me. I just put a 1912 wheat cent with that happening it was smaller though. And it was raised as well i was told it was a die crack. So i would say thats what you have. Interesting theres 2 though.
It's not a Die Crack at all. Die Cracks are on the Die itself and when it strikes the blank planchet the area will look raised. Thats because the metal of the blank will flow into the crack. Yout Cent is another issue. Not sure what it could be though.
THis might be an instance that full obv and rev pics are needed, Very interesting, this is only a possibility, mis- aligned die clash.
I should have added they would be precisely opposite on the planchet from the anomalies on the obverse. Even if not there , this was damage of some type to the planchet before the strike. Cool !
P&G , Radical MDC's have a different "look" here is a pic of my MDC-1c-1998-04 1998 mad clash MDC-1c-1998-04 by stoneman227, on Flickr
My thought was this could be an Incomplete Punch error http://www.error-ref.com/incomplete-punch/ though this should show on the reverse as well. Question , are the anomalies under the bust at VDB similar ?
An incomplete punch would be semi-circular and show on both sides of the coin. since equal pressure was applied on both sides but not enough to punch all the way through the planchet.
The planchet had scratches in it before it was stamped. That is why the scratches have a raised look and feel after being stamped. Think of how the die looks. Then look at the coins after, that's you answer.
