I found this in a banroll a few weeks ago. The year is 1983. These are the best pictures I could get, but I think they show the detail well enough. What do you guys think? Shattered die, or just a series of die cracks?
I really can't tell from looking at the coin, but I am really the wrong person for errors. Is the design actually higher than the rim as the photo suggests ?
I think that's just an effect of the picture. It was taken with a magnifier, so it's not very good. Here's another picture to better show what are die cracks and what are just scratches. The crack running from the top left corner of Monticello to the dome looks strange, almost as if the area inside that 'ring' is indented.
Mike Diamond told me that it's a heavily clashed die. If you look closely, you can see Jefferson's profile upside down in the picture. It's not quite a shattered die, but not a bad roll find either!
The obverse doesn't seem to be affected. I'll take a closer look at it later with my magnifier to make sure there's not a small clash mark on the obverse.
I took a closer look, and there is actually a very faint image of the Monticello on either side of Jefferson, as well as a fairly prominent 'O' from 'MONTICELLO' to the right of his forehead.
Wow, thanks, guys. Shows how much I know, I didn't even notice it was Jefferson's outline at first! :rolling: Here's a flipped picture, to show it a little better.
