So I've wanted this coin in MS 65 and I have found it. NGC graded still in the GSA box. I didn't know it would be graded in the box so that threw me off. Is that normal for this coin? This will be most significant coin purchase ever if I pull the trigger.

Yow! Numismedia says $1280. Yes, they grade these with a tamper-proof wrap around the box, as I understand it -- don't collect them myself, but I've seen them frequently.

Edit: quick eBay check of sold listings for "1885-CC GSA MS65" shows them closing at prices from $990 to $1450. Here's one showing the seal. Here's one with a different style (newer?).

Yes, I used to have an 1884 CC in a GSA Hoard plastic with an NGC Grade wrapped around it. I'll look for a link.

NGC has been grading them in the OGP for many years. It was only a couple of years ago (or so) that PCGS started grading them in the OGP. The big difference is that PCGS puts "a slab in a slab" which is sort of dumb.

I found it. Here's a photo for reference. This is common. Note that the NGC label is not around the plastic bag, but the plastic case.

It's what I've always wanted -- a way to get even more layers of plastic between my eyes and the coin!

"Yo dawg, I heard you like slabs..."

Had a price of $1,290.00. Said he would give it to me for $1,200.00. I haven't pulled the trigger.

Sounds like it's in a reasonable range. You'll have to decide whether it looks like the one you've been waiting for.

I think it's too far out of my league. :)

Anything that I would spend $1200 on, would have a better looking obverse than that, but that is just me. I'm also not the type of person to pay full retail.

If you are really interested, and have the option, wait 24 hours, look at it again, then decide.

I'd pass as I think you can find a better looking 65. Especially for a coin like this isn't really short in supply and is readily available.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I'll just stick with a roll of Mercs at 13.5xFace and a 1/10 ounce AGE. I'll keep it light today. I'm coming back tomorrow with my girlfriend and we'll see what happens.

    PCGS pop report - 4,361

    Recent auction results
    03/17 SB$940
    02/17 SB$999
02/17 HA$1,410 CAC green bean (not a fan of the toning, though)
    02/17 HA$1,058 beautiful coin, IMHO

If you are still interested in buying this tomorrow, be respectful of the dealer, but mention these recent realized prices and see if he'll do in the neighborhood of $1,000.

yep I've had to pass on a few nice looking ones that we're in the stupid PCGS slab in a slab. Great, it comes with the original box that the slab no longer fits in

I would not buy it as a 65. To me it is a solid 64. Not worth $1200.

Well I'm home and looking at the pictures of this coin. Sorry they weren't great, but that was the best I could do with an Iphone at a dealers table. Anyways, I am glad I did not purchase it. Was it the chatter on the cheek and neck that most of you didn't like? What else did you guys not like about the coin. I am learning here only been collecting for just over a year. I have not purchased a coin over $75.00 and not really purchased many at all. I took some sound advice from you guys here and that was to learn before I started to buy and also not to buy the slab but the coin.
