I heard they were going to also put them in a silver set, which had a 50,000 limit last year. Even with that added, it is a very low mintage. Not sure. If it is a quick sale out and an easy flip, I might do that. If some look like 70's, it might be worth it to grade.
Yes the mint themselves says this in the press release 'Product Limit is 75,000. Later this year, the American Eagle One Ounce Silver Proof Coin with the "S" mint mark from the San Francisco Mint will be available as part of the 2017 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set.' https://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index1865.html?action=press_release&id=1865 Generally those sets have had a 50,000 product limit for quantity. However, seeing as this coin is going to be a special offering and there is nothing preventing the mint from making as many 2017 limited sets as they want, it may in fact be higher than an additional 50K imo. Without providing a maximum mintage the mint pretty much protects themselves with being able to produce as many additional as they want and just increase the product limit of the offering that contains it later in the year.
The next closest examples would be the 2011 uncirculated S and reverse proof P at 100,000 each. I wonder if the 2017 silver set will have both S and W versions... or maybe they want the limited edition sets to be all SF mint coins and the S proof eagle will be a yearly thing...
The mint has done a great job of making this series a lot of fun to collect. When the program first came out, you could buy the proof for $23 and the MS were going for $6.
That deal really ticked off a lot of collectors. I'll bet many quit collecting them over it. A lot of folks bought the set and just sold the gold.
I read that the "S" comes on the Silver Pr Eagle only on the Limited Set and the Congratulation Set. The other Silver Pr Eagle will be "W" .
This is why I gave up on ASE proofs. Too many versions and mint marks to keep up with. Pretty coins though.
I actually remember Silver Eagles being one of the items I would buy at my LCS when I started going in the early 2000s and even then the prices were $7-$8.50 each.
Probably pretty good as there is still no apparent ordering limits per account. Imo a big mistake by the mint as it sets up a perfect situation for the big fish to dominate the early market and supply of this coin as who knows when the 2017 Limited edition silver set will even be released.
I think I'll try for one if I get up in time. If I miss out, I won't sweat it. If the Mint wants to let the Big Boys corner the market, then may the Big Boys choke on them.
The limited edition set also carries a relatively higher price. I would think normal folk would prefer the single eagle over the limited edition set. We'll see. I'm gonna jump on and try to get mine. Maybe it won't be a lot of traffic, just high volume per person. That should make it easier to process the order.
Got 12. Order number USM049852XX. IF a couple big dealers know about these, it COULD sell out today. That's what I'm hoping for.
