Earlier this year I kind of decided to try to narrow down my focus on collecting a bit. Rather than buying everything that catches my eye, which I still sort of do. I've been taking an interest in Julia Domna coins. And rather than creating one long running thread, I'm probably going to be making new threads for each coins. Hopefully that will be easier to read through, and find a certain coin if anyone wants. My latest one was spurred by @stevex6 I wanted it once I saw the reverse. Mine may not be as nice as some, but to me it is still a nice coin to add to my collection. A bit about the antoninianus for those that don't know, Also known as a double denarius. The antoninianus was created by Caracalla in early 215 which featured a radiant crown which showed its value. The antoninianus was also larger than a normal denarius. Over time it was debased until the antoninianus was purely bronze. 211-217 A.D. AR23 , 4.9g o: IVLIA PIA FELIX AVG Draped bust right r: Luna with crescent on head and cloak floating around head in biga left LVNA LCIFERA RIC IV 379a var. Feel free to share anything you like. Also, let me know which one is better. One long running thread or a separate one for each coin. I'm slowly organizing my coins online and physically.
Very cool coin - I love the hair and reverse! One thread or many won't make much of a difference. I tried one with challenge coins...and after a while it just fell off and that may happen with yours as well.
I prefer separate threads. This one is interesting with the misspelling on the reverse. It should read LVNA LVCIFERA. Lucifera means bringer of light. Compare: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=305936 This one should be seen by an expert.
Neat coin! Reverse die with the misspelling looks to be a match with this one: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1108636
Nice!! icerain, congrats on your sweet OP-addition Oh, and yes, I have one as well ... I love the type as well => hey, we're coin bros!! LVNA LVCIFERA ..... apparently my example has the missing "V"
Julia Domna AD 193-211, issued under Caracalla Roman AR Antoninianus, 5.11 g; 23.3 mm Rome, AD 217 Obv: IVLIA PIA FELIX AVG, diademed and draped bust right on crescent Rev: VENVS GENETRIX, Venus enthroned left, holding apple; Cupid at feet Refs: RIC 389a; BMCRE 27; RCV 7099; Cohen 206; Hill 1582
Very nice, I always liked that reverse type. Julia Domna (194 - 217 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: IVLIA PIA FELIX AVG, Diademed and draped bust right, resting on crescent. R: VENVS GENETRIX, Venus seated left holding hand out, and scepter. Rome 4.5g 23mm RIC 388a, RSC 206a
Wonderful example @icerain !! I Love the portrait and the super cool reverse!! And the misspelling adds another item of interest. Terrific Ants guys!!!
Here is one of my Iulia Domna, the portrait is not very good but the reverse interesting:reopresenting the four seasons with Iulia Domna.
I've always liked that too. Seen them in my price range, but than I think, "do I need another Domna"?
Nice, I got one of these coming in. Nice, I saw one awhile ago in low grade and passed on it. Still searching for one at a reasonable price. Yes you do.
The nice thing about Domna coins is that there are plenty to go around (as long as you don't decide you want the ones I want). If we all were to post the coin of hers we like best, we quite possibly could end up with all different choices even considering there are so many that none of us have even seen. I could never pick just one.
Nice capture @icerain ! I really like the Luna Lucifera reverse... way cool. I have several Domna, but I will show her As: RI Julia Domna 196-211 CE AE As Hilaritas cornuc RIC IVa 877
I really like the reverse of the OP coin, a great type! I have a fairly common type, with Juno standing left holding patera and scepter, peacock at feet.
