Stupid question, proof or AU.

By the way, between the b and the e in liberty is just a glare, not anything on the quarter. I have seen a lot of shiners in circulation but this one is my first AU eagle quarter I have seen in circulation if it's not a proof. I'm almost cirtain it isn't but I've learned here that I don't know much even though I'd like to think I do lol this quarter is a blinder though

@Tyler Graton if you had a Red Book, you would find that the Philly Mint didn't strike any proof quarters in 1987.

Your title should read, Proof and AU? not Proof or AU
They are 2 different things...
AU is used in grading a coin. There is a scale I want to share with you that explain the grading system


Proof is how it was minted or in other words the method of manufacture.

Paddyman, i know there is a difference in proof and AU (Almost Un-circulated) The question was if this quarter was a proof quarter, or an AU condition quarter (why i used or instead of and) I am trying to better understand Uncirculated vs Almost Un-circulated, and proof coins coins so i know what to keep if its a good key date and it seems like there are many opinions of the internet of what AU condition is (idk if that has to do with date condition rarity) but i like to get the opinion of people who frequently send in stuff to PCGS and and get back things that. The reason why i want to better understand proof coins cause i dont want to send a proof strike front, buisness strike back (meant for circulation) type quarters if you catch my drift.

I dont know, but as soon as i find more things on it ill let you know and give you links lol, but somewhere in the web i read that, that coin apparently exists (error coin where proof was struck on back or front and business strike on front or back)

That's simply not possible, because "Proof" describes one type of preparatory and striking procedure, and "Business Strike" an entirely different procedure. They use the same dies and presses, but completely different levels of care throughout.

Either type can get out into circulation, and once they start showing wear the term "Almost Uncirculated" could then apply to either.
