I found a 1932 s mint quarter in my change. It seems to be in good shape. Has a bit of black residue on it. Do i need to get this graded? Any idea on value would be great. I am a ww2 collector with no coin experience. I know pictures arent perfect. You can see the hair lines faintly, as well as marks on eagles chest
I can tell you the silver melt value.. about $3.27 I want to share this webpage with you - http://cointrackers.com/coins/418/1932-s-washington-quarter/ It is a Key Date! quote "Numismatic vs Intrinsic Value: This coin in poor condition is still worth $170.73 more than the intrinsic value from silver content of $3.27, this coin is thus more valuable to a collector than to a silver bug. Coins worth more to a collectors may be a better long term investment. If the metal prices drop you will still have a coin that a numismatic would want to buy." closed quote IMHO - Peace
Something looks just a bit off. I can't place it, but maybe it's because I never see 1932 quarters that aren't worn to nothing. For some reason, I get the post 1998-quarter vibe from it. Maybe I'm going insane.
That does not look genuine. I have a few of those and none of them look like that. The 2 in the date looks wrong. Not sure how, but it seems altered to me.
I found it when the wal mart coin counter would not take it. I assume it was to heavy. I found a 1935 one at the same time. And that is worn bad
Then it is silver and so worth melt value. But unless we are missing something then not much else. Worth keeping. Oh, by the way, alway take picture of coin with them in the correct orientation. It is hard to twist the neck to look at them correctly. Also, cropping to size would help to show more details.
Here is an image of a fake 1932 from my files. Note the very weird "2," somewhat similar to what Sakata pointed out:
Before half the board piles on and starts repeating opinions already expressed, perhaps the OP could take and then post clear and well lit photos.
I, for one, would like to see a very clear close-up of the mintmark. It looks dark around the edges, so I'm wondering if the mintmark wasn't added. Chris
Now that I see those I think it is that mark next to the 2 which put me off initially. But the 2 still does not look quite right. I guess the bottom line is that I cannot believe this coin could have remained in circulation all this time. Even if it had been returned to circulation after being out for a long time it still seems very unlikely. So I tend to see something different.
I think the 2 might be OK. I always thought the original punch for the 2 didn't fit the coin but that's the design. It was fixed in 1942. I'm more concerned with the mm. 1932-D and S used to be counterfeited quite extensively by adding a mm. This was done by soldering a mm onto the back. One of the signs was darkness around the mm. On many, you can see solder at high magnification. There may be diagnostics as to the correct S for 1932 versus others from the 40's and 50's but I don't know them (read: to lazy to look them up). The comparison pic that rickmp posted, seems to show a diff style of mm for the OPs coin vs genuine. Assuming there is only 1 mm style for 32-S, I would dig into that area.
Weak IGWT typical of the 1932 issues and nothing immediately jumps out at me. At this point I would not jump on the it must be fake bandwagon.
Here is my 1932-S NGC "XF Details" for comparison. Looks similar to me. Maybe some kid cashed them in out of somebody's collection.
I agree with Chris. If this quarter is silver, it appears as if the S was attached, which is common with this coin. A 1932 is still around $8 but I am skeptical of the S.
