What is the mass opinion as to Lincoln cent prices these days? We have all seen them skyrocket in the Greysheet, month after month. Is this due to the 100 year anniversary coming up? OR, are they just undervalued as a series. I think a litle of both. Nice, no problem early Lincolns are not at all rare, but some of them are difficult, I pay very close attention to strike, and they tend to suffer on this feature on many early semi key dates. Many of them have been cleaned, and it is a pleasure just to find and collect Fine or better, no problem coins. Nothing like a gorgeous, well struck, well color and condition matched set in XF / AU. Makes my heart skip a beat as I upgrade a coin or two in my set. My last toughy is going to be the 1924-D, super well struck, chocolate brown AU. Hmmmm, going to be expensive as well, but I'll pay dearly when I find the right one.
I just got the biggest kick out of your avatar! Nice Doo on that Indian Guy..... LOL RickieB As for cents and prices..well I am not really a cent guy. Bet ya Speddy or Doug can hep you out there. Good luck.. Rickie B
On coins like the 14-D there isn't a price guide that can keep up with the price IMHO. I upgraded last year (I think it was) from a G-4 graded one to a nice F12, I had to go a nice bit OVER ASK on that coin! I'm glad I did because from what I'm seeing ASK is now what I paid, and people are still paying more, and more!! Speedy
Arizon Jack, I posted a similar question about wheats recently and got mixed replies. To me it looks like they WILL continue to move until at least 2009 and probably past that but that's just my opinion. In the meantime I'm picking up semi-keys that have not shown quite as much movement (YET). I like the 10-S, 12-S, 13-S and 14-S. 11-S and 22-D and 24-D although there has been some pretty serious movement with the 11-S and 24-D. Getting pricey fast. Of the dates I just listed I have always picked up no problem examples in VG-VF if the price was right. The VDB has really surprised me. I was getting XF coins for $3 a few years ago and now bid is $13? I am not a die hard Lincoln collector and have taken some "mild criticism" for that but it has never stopped me from buying them. I know enough to spot a deal when I see one. Love the 14-D you posted - mine is an ANACS F15 that I picked up a few months ago. $225 - $90 UNDER bid. Was I looking for it? NO. Did I snatch it up in a heartbeat - YOU BETCHA. I say get them while you can. You can always sell off dupes to upgrade in the future and take some of the sting out of the rising prices.
When 2009 hits I beleive that the set is going to skyrocket. So picking up keys and semi keys now is what needs to be done if you want to turn around and make a bit o money. I esp like the 1909 and the 1909 vdb in unc all the S mints from 09-16 the 14,22,24 D and the 31S. I have watched the market on these coins go crazy. I remember picking up my 14-d in F-12 for $80, about $40 under list in 2000, that was the same year I picked up my 09-s for $50 in XF. Now you can't even sneeze at those coins in AG-3 for those prices. I expect the s vdb to top $2000 in AU by years end in 09.
An interesting comment Speedy and the evidence is in black and white. I was just perusing my latest Greysheet (AUG 10) and my most recent issue of Coin Prices. Retail sources can't keep up in several cases. I don't see this often but have noticed a few times over the years.Several of the coins that are moving the fastest in Greysheet now list HIGHER in Greysheet than at "current" retail levels. This may be the time to go into a shop and buy no problem coins at full retail (or less) rather than looking for that "Greysheet deal". One of my local dealers is now pricing all of his stuff at Greysheet ask. Didn't really look at his Lincolns on my last budget but will next time. If it's current Greysheet I'll tell him I'll pay retail. If nothing else he'll get a laugh out of it.
I'm working on finishing my set. Basically, I'm down to the tougher dates. I may never get an 09 S VDB, but I'm going to try like hell. If I would've grabbed one when I started collecting seriously seven years ago, it would have done some good. Now, it's just wishful thinking.
Yep, anybody who has read any of my feedback knows I'm stocking up. I found the 14-D at a coin shop in Phoenix, $850, no questions asked, I could not get the $$$ out fast enough. I also paid $1350 for my S-VDB, NGC-AU-55, I'll post a pic. No problem paying full ask at todays levels, and a premium for a well struck high end example. Money well spent in my opinion. My picture quality is poor, but I'm getting better as I go. See related post on ICG slabing, I'll update with the 14-D grade in a cpl weeks. Basically, I slab Lincolns for authenticity, I think I can grade my own coins.
Already doing it. Just sent a check for a 10-S in Fine, an 11-D in VG and a 13-S in VF. Getting them from a guy that I have dealt with for years so I have no concerns there. Like I said earlier Retail is way under bid. I paid close to retail with was about $21 UNDER bid. Yup, I think retail will catch up soon so get em while you can.
New additions to the Lincolns First cwtokenman - that is a really COOL piece you have there. I added to my semi keys today. 1910-S in VF, 1911-S in XF, 1912-S in F. I bought them at the local shop at a bit under Greysheet ask but over retail which I figured would happen. Got no problem with that as the dealer is honest, grades well and the coins are all problem free originals. He also thinks that the Lincolns will skyrocket and doesn't need to say that to make a sale. I've been dealing with him for about 15 years now. Oh and Treashunt, While I was there I did snap up his only 1913 Barber Quarter. A solid G4 coin with nice, original dirt!
I'm trying to grab up all of the key and semi key Lincolns right now myself. I made my biggest Lincoln purchase recently when I bought my PCGS AU53 09-s vdb. Now I need to work on the others as they keep going up in price. I guess the best way would be to just buy them all at once and get it overwith but its no fun that way. There's a local show coming up here in Sept. that I plan on going to and I may get some Lincolns there...but, that never goes as planned.
Just FYI.... At an auction today, rolls of UNC Lincolns were going for double the normal price. I guess the hype has started the feeding frenzy. I did get a couple of decent deals on some individual Lincolns though. Got a 20, 24 & a 27D.
Doesn't surprise me Roto, The coin magazines are behind Greysheet on many coins right now. Big time on the semi-keys. Of course Greysheet comes out every week and is dealer oriented whereas the mags are monthly in many cases. It will be real interesting to see what the next few issues of monthly mags list at. My latest issue of Coin Prices had the 11-S in XF at $50. The most recent Greysheet with Lincolns had bid at $60 and ask at $67. Yes, I did pay over $50 for it and figured I would. Not worried though as I'd be willing to bet that, maybe as early as year's end, that coin will be retailing at $80 or more. I only hope the don't move TOO fast. I wanna get more.
I would gladly pay the $67 for a primo XF 11-S. I just received this one in todays mail: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330151347640 It is getting downright tough to snag these nice ones any cheaper than bid/ask these days, god know I try every one I can.
