I'm sure the '48 Rosie has been dipped and most likely the Kennedy has been too. Just a lesson learned. Its almost like the #2 rule of coin collecting in here..never buy an SGS coin. In case you're wondering what #1 is.....its dont ever clean your coins, not even in the slightest bit.

Thanks, Lesson and rules learned so far! lol.

Is there anyway to tell for sure if that has been dipped, could i take it to a local dealer? or does he have to crack open the slab?

If you have a dealer nearby I'd most definitely do it. If it's a reputable dealer you'll get an honest response.

The dealer may even make an offer but be prepared it will most likely be way less than what you paid. Another hunk of the learning experience I'm afraid.

As for keeping even if they were MS60 I don't think so. Even in MS65 they don't rate $50 to me.

Mark_H had a good point about coin shops. Go in, be nice, show interest. A good dealer will "take you under his wing" if you're really interested. Be warned though some dealers can be rude. Don't interrupt them when they are involved with a customer.
One of my favorite local dealers has this trait at times but as we have come to know one another we both have a great deal of respect for one another. Like anything else. Takes a little work and patience.

I'll do that then, when I get them, I'll go to the dealer nearby.
I cant beleive this company does this, and they haven't been stopped yet. and even Ebay continues to keep them on.

I payed for them yesterday, I wonder if they shipped them. Could i cancel the order or just wait till I receive them??

I would wait until you received them - if you do return them then you might be out only s&h. Then I would take them to a local dealer - let them look at them and maybe show you some better examples. The thing I like most about my local dealer is that I can hold the coins in person, get them to talk to me about them. Trust me - holding the coins in hand makes a big difference than looking at pictures. It is much easier to grade coins in hand than from pictures. So look at a lot of coins in hand, ask questions, and buy a few coins from the dealer(they do not have to be expensive). My local dealer is just as happy to sell me low dollar coins as high dollar coins. So come back post pictures, ask questions and everybody will be happy to help. Also remember some are brutally harsh on this board, but they do not mean to offend. Also what we see in pictures may not be what you see in hand.

I do not know enough about these coins to tell if they are cleaned - I can't tell if those streaks are on the holder for the kennedy or on the coin itself. On the dime I could not tell if that was glare or frostiness on the dime.

    first of all welcome!

you're getting very good advice here and i hope you think about it before spending money on some of the coins out there for sale.

the basic rules are to learn as much as you can about this hobby to minimize money losses. read as much as you can and ask questions any time you don't understand something entirely.

    reaper,

Just keep in mind that everyone else here has made mistakes too. I don't think there is any way to avoid it so don't worry about it. Get your money back if you can, and if you can't, try to determine the correct grade and condition by studying. That's part of the hobby too.

I am buying 2 books, 1 on US coins, and another on Canadian coins.

What do you guys think about getting coins from the coin dealers at a flea market?

Obviously mostly already said here. I too say send them back. Also, welcome to a place where you can learn. Occationally someone may make a silly remark about a purchase but it is mostly intended for a learning process. As noted almost everyone, everywhere has been taken in some way. Ask people about buying a used car. I would really send those back. Purchase a few books on coins. Join coin forums that specialize in certain types like coppercoins.com. At sights like those you can acquire detailed information as to anything specific. And that is just one more thing about this forum. If no one knows for sure, they will say so and attempt to recommend a forum or web site where you can acquire the information you need.
As you learn more and more you will find there is an amazing amount about coins that many others also don't know. Not meaning to be repeditive but send them back.

    Coin book suggestions?

    First reaper,

I'm really pleased that you are reading all of the comments made and responding.

    NOW FOR EVERYONE ELSE!

Good job! Now what coin books shall we recommend. I'll toss my suggestions in later.

Last part is flea markets. I HATE THEM .....BUT on the other hand I've seen some people on CT getting some decent coins. Guess that depends on where you live. In my neck of the woods they really suck.

I will recommend ANA Grading Standards for United States Coins and obviously the "Red Book". As for flea markets, I have only ever bought one coin at a flea market and that was my AU 1906 Liberty $5 dollar coin, which I got a great deal on for $175. Like Clembo said though, it all depends where you live. Not all flea market coin dealers are going to be friendly and willing to negotiate a fair price.

I listen to all comments said and take them in.

That would be great, letting me know some good books to get aswell. I'll definitely pick up a Red Book!

and Thirdly, The fleamarket near me has A lot of coins and paper money. Some people that work there are nice and do sometimes negotiate the price. I'm just worried about getting tricked into coins that have been dipped or cleaned or w/e the reason.

    Well,

You listed the right ones there Indianhead. ANA for sure. I don't buy Redbook all that often but it IS informative.

We should probably expand into magazines as well. I like to buy the occasional copy of Coin Prices. Gives an idea as to retail and what I really like is mintage figures. Also pick up Coin World and Numismatic News on occasion.

As for Canadian. Charlton? I'm not real heavy into Canadian coinage but it seems to be the best. I could be VERY wrong here so bear with me and correct me if I'm wrong.

    Reaper,

If you start getting into paper money you will need good books for that too. I would be REAL careful with that at ANY location. Many notes are rare (even moderns) but it takes research. NOT EVERY STAR note is rare for example.

Currency is a totally different animal so honestly I would suggest sticking to coins first.
