Slabs to look out for that might be worth more than you think

I have a soft spot for the old ANACS soapbox holders too. Not every slab has a great coin in it, but they were very strict on grading. I also collect certain VAMS. Just picked this one $100 under list price. Yeah, another 1886 VAM1-C. This will make #13 of them for me. I'm over half a roll of the same VAM, most of them are already graded and attributed. I've so many of them I can smell them before even looking at the obverse, which tells you nothing with this one.

 

So, this might be worth more than 10 cents? ?

 

Better to buy moderns already graded. Never understood why anyone would pay a grading service for a clad coin that soon after mintage. But to each his own,

 

Oh absolutely. I'd pay $20 for that, easily. Although it's likely worth more.

 

I submitted it because I thought I seen doubling on the reverse. When I got it back, it had a note with it stating "the doubling on the reverse is the result of die wear". I've always considered it payment on my education and keep it as such.

 

Me personally, I don't like the holders where you have a solid interior surrounding the coin like those white slabs. I like the prongs which give you some separation and you can see some/part of the coin's edge.

Some holders lookg GREAT with a particular coin. Modern reverse proof gold looks AWESOME juxtaposed against the NGC black holders. Had one, had to sell it, still teed off years later. Maybe a replacement target at FUN 2027.

 

I would guess around $30 but possibly more if someone born that year or has an anniversary that year wants the particular date (as there likely are very few modern coins in that generation of slab).

 

Are you asking specifically about Gold $20s or any coin? You will find a handful of gold CAC with Buffalo Nickels, Mercury Dimes, and Franklin Half Dollars at any large show. The major auction sites tend to have a few each auction too. But if you are looking for a Gold $20, there might not be any at a show or auction. Maybe 1 or 2 unless it's specifically a gold CAC auction or a dealer that has just acquired/made (via sending in) some.

 

I guess the reason I am beating myself up is when you want a certain coin ($20 DE) in a certain holder (OGH 3.1) with CAC/Gold CAC.....it really narrows the field.

I learned this at FUN 2027 when I couldn't find my 4-factor coin, a 1908 No Motto Saint with the above traits plus the Wells Fargo pedigree.

I really liked that 1922 Gold CAC Saint that went for $5,600 w/bp earlier this week but just didn't have the $$$.

Why couldn't they accept an out-of-state, post-dated, 3rd-party check like Homer Simpson once asked about ?

 

Part of the process is the hunt so an extended hunt makes finding the right coin more rewarding.

And I also have some coins on my want list that seem out of reach but there are other options that I pivot to in the meantime.

 

The reward may go to my heirs if I extend some of these searches much longer, DDDDD !!

Yeah, that's what I do...goto a local smaller coin show or an LCS and "treat" myself to a fractional gold coin or a silver coin.

I remember when gold was $1,000 an ounce (or less !) and you could get a 1/4 ounce coin for $300 and half-ouncers for $600, tops.
