Are more selective coin prices going up?

Perhaps it’s me, it seems like the coins I like to collect, standing liberty quarters and capped bust halves, are going up dramatically recently, well above PCGS retail prices. I see this trend particularly after the ANA show. I have been blown away with recent markup. Coins with premium appearance will demand more for sure, but this might be getting out of control.

I have been watching the prices of bust half dollars for a few years. The prices of AU coins with nice toning just keep going up. Even the lower grade problem coins are selling for prices above what I thought they were worth. I'm not sure but this may be true for all silver bust coins. At the last January FUN Show, many of the coins I went to take a second look at had already sold.

We had a decade-long bear market that we ended right after Covid.

Lots of pent-up demand I guess.

That's why I am wondering if I am going to be kicking myself for not grabbing that Gold CAC 1922 Saint I saw the other night. :(

Trying to keep my powder dry for FUN 2027 but you never know what coins will or won't be there next January.

Better example Coin prices are definitely going up, in particular in the last 12 months, and certainly on GreatCollections. Even for taking into account any holder premium, CAC sticker premium, toning premium, and adding 10% more above the high retain prices guides, I still get smoked on 90% of coins I bid on. UP UP UP!

I would say the same coin now commands a higher price on GC than eBay, which is a flip-flop from years ago.

True. In the past I would take notes on coins I really liked, go back to the hotel, make a nice drink and research my list. That did not work well for me back in January. I don't really want to take my laptop to the show with me. I'm not smart enough to use my phone for research but I guess it's time to learn.

Gold CAC + OGH 3.1 led to a 28% premium over bullion value for coins that were pretty much bullion coins.

If you want to be conservative, figure the "normal" bullion coin would sell at 4% over melt in MS-64 or lower grade....so an extra mid-20's percentage was tacked on because of the CAC and holder.

I can't collect the coins you are looking for. It would drive me crazy. You got me watching for CAC gold at FUN back in January. That was a first for me. I didn't see very many but after the show someone posted about a dealer that was displaying a really nice collection. I missed it.

I may have caught it....I remember a dealer had Saints with CAC but they were more "modern" holders, not the OGHs I was looking for.

Decent pricing....he was there Thurs/Friday (gone Saturday as I recall). Have to check my notes and see if I got his name written down or if I mentioned it in my FUN write-up.

That's the bad thing about full-ounce gold coin collecting...every damn purchase (at least for me) is a HUGE expenditure. Maybe not for some here and on the CU Forums.

If I was collecting Quarter or even Half Eagles...or MSDs...let alone non-PM coins...there'd be lots more purchases and I wouldn't have to think twice on 90% of the stuff I would like to bid on or purchase. But the 1 oz pre-1933's start at spot gold....$4,400 an ounce as of today. That's the floor. :(

I may have to draft an army to help me scout in January 2027. We'll plan an aisle-by-aisle attack leaving no stone -- or CAC coin !! -- unturned !! :D

And then stuff happens like dealers departing late-Friday/early-Saturday that can totally blow your plans apart.
