I have an SEGS graded 1914/3 buffalo nickel in my collection. However, it does not look like the overdate to me. What do you think?
I don’t see the point of the three in the center of 4 But I do see that two dots on either side of the top of the 4 plus the one at the base of the floor on the left. Nice find!
If it is the overdate, then I am very happy. I only paid $75 for it because the seller did not believe that it was the overdate. I figured $75 for a buffalo as pretty as this coin was worth that.
I think it's just toning patches that look like some of the overdate features. I'm not seeing a strong match to the images on the PCGS CoinFacts page...
If anything is in its favor, although it is not clear in the pictures, the 9, 1, and 4 do appear to have doubling.
Okay, that was one of the things I was looking for and not seeing in your images. This might be one case where a microscope would help...
That's clearer for sure. I'm still not seeing the same doubling I see on that one PCGS image - but I don't see it on their other images, either. So I guess my bottom line is "I'm out of my depth on this one".
An image on anyone’s website or in any book will be an example, but as the die wears that image will change. I believe what I see by the images posted by the OP our changes in the die.
I think the consensus is "unpredictably". They were owned and run for a while by a guy who knew his stuff and wasn't trying to rip people off, but they were owned and run during other periods by... other people. I don't know what period your slab comes from.
