It's a PASS for me. Bad condition plus you can't tell that it's an 1872.

 

Looks more like an 1873 or 1878.

 

I think the price is to high for the poor grade. I would hold off for a nicer coin in better condition even if it cost more.

NGC has it listed PrAg for $80.00 so it seems like a good price/deal.

I would like/be happy over the price for this keydate, but I think I would be unhappy with the coin.

 

I would need to see it in person, hard to tell the date.

 

i agree. Enlarged it looks a dead ringer for 1878.

 

For a key date, I'd want the date to be clear enough that there is no doubt.

I wouldn't touch it either. The date is "iffy" and condition very poor. It's your choice though so go for it if you like it.

I have bought coins in similar condition as "hole fillers" until I could find a better one. If I didn't find a better one, then I, at least had one. I agree with the others that this looks a lot like a 1878. But, the worn 2 can look like an 8. In hand you may be able to read the date better? Like has been pointed out, it's what you are happy with. I totally understand having a tight budget. But, I would try my best to make sure the date is legible. If there is a return option, you could buy it, and if the date wasn't good enough, return it. But, check out the return policy very carefully. Sometimes the return gets expensive. Bottom line is, do you like it enough to maybe have it for a very long time? Can you increase your budget enough to get a better one? The one that needs to be happy with the purchase is you.

 

This is an extremely important point. If you have a monthly budget for coins, often it is worth it to wait an extra month or two while you are searching for the exact right coin for your set. By the time you find the right coin, you'll have saved enough to afford it.

Don't rush to buy a "compromise" coin just because you want it. Patience is a key part of collecting.

 

Looked again, and that is a 1878. That’s a flattened last 8.

Numismedia/FMV has G4/$28.00. PrAg would be about $20.00 USD.

Agree with the Nays - as mention it looks like an 1878.

 

Ok. I looked because I have a bad habit of keeping a coin I've replaced/upgraded, unless it gets to be cost prohibitive. Here is the 1872 I replaced. It's not great, but you can see the date. The "STATES" is about gone, I think? Otherwise, just a very badly worn coin. Now, I'm not trying to talk you in to "taking a coin off my hands". Like I said, I keep them unless I can't afford to. But, I like helping someone, if I can. If you're interested in this extra coin I have, PM me and think about what you've got you'd be willing to trade? You won't hurt my feelings if you decide to save for a better one.

 

Nice clear date on a solid, problem free coin, with great color. This is an improvement on the OP ebay coin in every way.
