It does Randy, I believe that he couldn't call it a dollar. I asked him about it back in 2018 but don't fully remember.

This has been discussed ad nauseam, but you've encapsulated my issue with it. The 1964 Peace dollar was actually produced, and there have always been rumors that some still exist. Once separated from the provenance, his "fantasy" coins are indistinguishable from the real thing. In my view it's a flat-out counterfeit.

I can go buy one on Etsy right now for $23. Are those considered "wrong" just because they're such poor quality or they're Chinese, or are they OK too?

Now imagine someone with his skills and equipment facing dire economic circumstances. It's a pretty short ethical trip to just skipping the whole "provenance" thing.

I do like some of his other stuff. He seems to enjoy pushing the envelope and that side of it I don't appreciate. Others do.

Why would anyone pay the price for a Dan Carr "coin" and then try and pass it off as real for face value. That is surely a losing proposition. You can't fix stupid.

Were they overstruck on actual dollar coins, or were they struck on blanks, thus making "a dollar" where one didn't previously exist? That latter act is the one that anti-counterfeit statutes originally targeted, back when a dollar was a significant amount of value.

Today, we're arguing about numismatic value and fraud, not so much about face value, I think. Nobody ever cared if you defaced a dollar without intent to defraud, but they sure cared if you struck a dollar out of lead or iron. Today, nobody thinks it's a crime to make a hobo nickel, but I think we all agree it's a crime to stick a D on a 1916 dime. "Restriking" a 1916 dime to add a D, even "without fraudulent intent", seems like something we can all agree is wrong, too. Or, for that matter, restriking an 1884-S dollar to "restore" it to mint state.

Altering a silver dollar to make it a "1943" Peace dollar? Apparently some of us think that should be illegal, too. So far, no one has prevailed in court.

I can't know if they "found it necessary", but they certainly did it.

As I understand it, they stamped COPY on coins that were actual copies of actual coins. They apparently did not stamp it on fantasy strikes.

Big difference between what Dan Carr does and the Chinese do. The chinese fakes are clearly to defraud collectors. Dan Carr pieces are not for that purpose - he probably makes enough clearly with just all his fans. I am not a fan and do not own any of his pieces. I do like those fantasy large cents but not paying that kind of money for them. He can do his thing and it does not bother me.

I doubt if any of Daniel Carr's pieces are counterfeit and he's a member of CoinTalk here and he's responded to threads in the past. Just sayin', call his name if you want to duke it out! :D The coins he mints are years that were never issued, like the 1933 Gold Indian, never issued for circulation. Mines not gold but I still like it! lol.gif
