Topics involving the 47th president of the US- even peripherally

I recently had to remove another thread about coins bearing the portrait of the current president. It was going fine for a while, and most of the posts remained safely within numismatic boundaries and did not stray over the line into politics.

    Most
of them. Inevitably, some folks crossed the line and their posts had to be removed. One even crossed the line again after being warned, and I had to issue him infraction points- which is definitely not something we enjoy having to do.

The current occupant of The White House is the most controversial president in generations. That’s just a plain fact. Now, you may love him or you may hate him. All of us, the moderation team included, have our own personal opinions, and I know these opinions can be strong, whether they be pro- or anti-.

You must set these opinions aside when posting. It’s a very thin (sometimes hazy) line, and a slippery slope. You could even innocently post something innocuous and factual that could still drive a discussion off the rails.

So always try to keep that in mind. Please do not add fuel to fires, or pile up kindling for fires that haven’t even been lit yet. Use some forethought. Someone else is always around who might see the pile of kindling you left behind and decide to light a bonfire. Know what I mean?

Topics about coins showing the president are not automatically forbidden, provided they stick to purely neutral, numismatic discussion.

But because this particular political figure is such a lightning rod, any topic so much as mentioning his name is dangerous. We will be watching these topics and will remove them when they go off the rails, as so many unfortunately end up doing. Members who egregiously flaunt the “no politics” rule will receive infractions when the moderation team deems it necessary.

CoinTalk is NOT a place for political discussion or opinions. Report any posts you see which you believe cross the line.

If you feel you must comment on the president, his policies, or any other political topic, we have a sister forum for that: Partisan Lines.

Thank you from your neighborhood moderation team.

Darn, I thought it was going well for the most part :(
Too bad there are those that can ruin it. But thanks for your work.

Most of us are indeed well-behaved. But some of us are just a bit too quick to post without considering the consequences.

This can happen even innocently or unintentionally. A few even find it funny to do what they think is a little lighthearted trolling, and just like to stir stuff up or start small brushfires. Remember, what you might consider lighthearted could be inflammatory to someone else.

We’re precariously balanced atop a powder keg. Best not to toss too many matches around, even casually.

You know what I mean. Thanks for understanding. :)

Overall, this is a very civilized place. Let’s keep it that way.

I certainly hope you weren’t waiting for a show. That’s the problem. Some folks like watching train wrecks, even if they’re not the ones causing them.

Good point @lordmarcovan . I chair a target shooting club with 270 members and most of us meet physically each week and we literally have members from all walks of life from low income to high earners and from several religions and backgrounds and all sides of the political spectrum. We have one fast rule, no politics and no religion should ever be discussed because we are unified by a common interest and become divided by differences of opinion. You phrased your explanation better than any politician could have!
Of course as a shooting club the last thing we want to engender is differences of opinion!

I could see where that could become problematic. :nailbiting:
