Hi, Here is what I believe to be an 1844/81 Large One Cent. If you look at the close up photo of the date... 1) The "8" looks a little funky 2) The first "4" has a tail wagging from the top right side. 3) The second "4" seems to have little wings at the top of both sides. Is this the 1844/81 variety? If so, do you think it would straight grade or not? I see some creases in the N and T in CENT on the reverse as well as two marks on the hair bun on the obverse. I don't know, however, if that's enough for it to be given the "details" grade or not. I don't see any obvious environmental damage. What do you think? Thanks!
Looks good to me but no to grading straight. 1844 Braided Hair Liberty Head Large Cent 44 Over 81 Early Copper Penny Coin Value Prices, Photos & Info
I'm not sure about the overdate. Die varieties aren't my forte. As to whether it would straight grade or not, I dunno. I personally think the small marks on the coin are fairly consistent for a piece in relatively lower grade like this, and possibly within acceptable range. The color is a little light but might also fall within acceptable parameters. I'd say it has a chance to straight grade, but I wouldn't wanna try to predict those chances. I'm sure the TPG could confirm whether or not it's the overdate.
