This one is in better shape than the one above it. I wonder why the difference and why do they grade them so tough?
Congrats....the $500 ran you about $3K, give-or-take ? I was surprised that $1,000 bills weren't as pricey relative to the $500's when I perused the HA archives (have to do GC, too)....I think that was because circulated $500's in lower grades got bought up during Covid and the price curve "kinked upwards" for the lower bill. But for 60's bills in high grade, you clearly had price separation.
yes it did run a bit over 3K. Could have gotten a much more worn one for around 1700 but I wanted a nicer version.
I'm seeing $500 bills with obvious folds and discoloration and rounded corners.....approximately $1,800 - $2,000 or 3-4x FV all-in. I like the Light Green Seal look but you have to pay up for it.
Yeah many that you come across do have many issues, that,s why i like A/U grades in both coins and currency usually well represented and free of obvious problems.
Yes....you get bills in the 25-35 range (or lower) and it's clear immediately that the problems jump out at you. But get to 40-45 and you have to focus for a few seconds if not longer to see why it got the grade it did. In many cases, a fold is not visible but is there. So the bill looks very nice, like my PMG-45 GC which many here thought was 10-20 grades higher. It appears the graders penalize a bill with a fold that isn't visible more than a rounded corner and/or off-margins.
Ita all about eys appeal, Collecting MPC for over 20 years i have seen some wild stuff ! 60-63 are just terrable examples so far off center its the only thing you look at, 64,s are just ok and i will pass all day long on 65,s ,66.67 and higher are worth the extra $$$$
They clearly don't penalize for bad margins as much for a hard-to-see fold. I don't know why. Any currency veterans here want to chime in why this is apparently so ?
If you have a note that is in uncirculated condition margins are the only thing that makes or breaks the grade, sure you have corner bumps but those are somewhat hard to see so the note doesnt get to much of a penalty. Now when you drop in to lower grades, not so much in A/U grades though but would say XF-40 and below all problems are magnafied, as your usually looking ant way more issues.
