I believe he collected Peace Dollars before he stopped collecting.

You know what would be the perfect title for a Doug Story?

I am really sorry to hear this, condolences to his family. Doug was an excellent mentor and “coin friend” to me. I learned a lot from his posts and emails. He sure will be missed…

I remember Doug saying that he collected Mint and Proof sets at one time. I believe he enjoyed reading and the study of coins as much as actually collecting. He had one heck of a library and could remember almost everything he read.

To the most knowledgeable numismatist I've ever known. Rest in peace close friend; you will be intensely missed. Thank you for everything

"Gordon Douglas John Michael Spence" he said it was a long story on the origin.

I did not know him at all, however I read a lot of his posts. He was a wealth of coin knowledge. RIP Gordie Doug.

How in the world does a person have so many names? Even better, how did it fit on his driver's license?

Doug came to visit my table the very first time I set up at the fun show. I had no idea who he was until he said he was a member of Coin talk and I instantly knew who he was; as he truly looked like his avatar.. I am sorry to hear of his passing.

Years ago Doug and I had our differences.
However for the last [many] years we got along great, and I broke his chops constantly.

He was wonderful to me when my wife passed, and I will remember him for that

I never got emails from any other moderator on any of the other sites but from Doug. He was very active on these boards and let us know that he was here to enforce the rules. Not so much to drop the hammer, bust someone's @$$, etc. but to nicely let you know he was there an he was the cop on the beat online and had a job to do.

Some of us here were giving Doug "the stuff" a while back.

    This was his response (below).

He was the master of tact and good taste, of course ("off with their heads!").

But he really was a class act... I miss him.

I have been kinda scarce around these parts lately and have been waiting to compose my thoughts to post a proper reply, which I’ll do later.

Thank you, @geekpryde, for posting this (sad) announcement, and for all you’ve done in your increased duties as an admin lately. I could not have stepped up to that role, even if asked.

Obviously without Doug’s steady hand at the helm, you’ve got some big shoes to fill there, in steering the ship.

Well said. My thanks as well geekpryde. Doug would be proud.
Also my thanks go out to Peter and Doug for setting a great example of how a forum should be ran. I have been on more coin forums than I can remember and none can hold a candle to how friendly this site is.

Thank you to all the mods as well. You guys have made a great team. Doug once shared with me a bit of what goes on out of public view. As members here we don't need to see the stuff the mods have to deal with.
