Hello everyone, I'm visiting my family in Effort Pennsylvania.. I picked this up Sorry, it's just a novelty item Everytime I'm here I always stop at a local Rock Shop Called The Pocono Rock Shop located in Tannersville PA. The owner is really knowledgeable and has decent prices. He was selling the quarter at the register so I picked one up to create this thread. I also purchase items for my wife to make more jewelry for our online business called We Luv Orchids & Treasures I always pick up at least one neat crystal for my collection. This time it's a Flourite from Spain Show us your plated novelty US coins!
There are some things that are plated, but they use a much thicker plating. (12K gold fill?) So because gold is so valuable these days, there actually can be some value there (not in the gold plated quarter.) For example I found this metal detecting, I thought it was foreign, but then I did some research and it is LDS (Mormons). The thick gold plating is equal to 5% of the weight of the piece and at current prices it's around $20. Often the gold filled stuff will have 1/20 on the piece.
I've got some of the gold and platinum plated quarters, bought them cheap at a garage sale years ago.
Neat. It's a nice area. I love the huge Shoprite supermarket. It's only a few minutes away from my sister's home. She lives on Grand Mesa Drive. A lot of deer roam around her back yard which is mostly woods.
Looks like a cool shop. We recently visited the Mines Museum of Earth Science in Golden, CO. There's a first floor and a basement full of specimens in cases. Having been to many museums like this I'd put it at #1. Awesome displays. I bought some blue tiger eye and a solid round copper ball about the size of a golf ball. And an unknown dinosaur bone fragment.
I remember when the "get buried in your numismatic purchases at home" channel called these gold (and platinum) plated quarters an "investment."
