Hi all! Happy Father’s Day Came across this 1970 S Large Date cent in a lot of coins I bought while in Switzerland. What is going on with this mintmark? Looks like the top of the S has a die chip or damaged mintmark punch? In the lower loop of the S it looks like the middle bar of the S has been replicated three times? I am assuming this is an RPM and not a damaged mintmark punch, but could be wrong there. It looks similar to some on CopperCoins and VarietyVista, but struggling to see a match. What do you all think?
A coin I have looks similar to yours. I alway thought there was a die chip inside to mintmark. Both coins being struck with a damaged mintmark punch is a possibility. Note my coin is a small date, which had to be made with a different die. But yet has a similar mm.
Wow, quite interesting! Thank you for pulling out some examples from your collection for some comparative study. Very interesting to see the same "chip." Its reoccurrence makes me think it is a damaged mintmark punch. What do you make of the tripling(?) in the lower loop of the mintmark on my coin and on your small date?
I am not sure that the marks in the bottom loop has anything to do with being an RPM, I just figured they were marks made when the press operator was dressing (cleaning) the die. Variety Vista does not have a listing for such a coin.
