I can't remember if I've posted this before, but bear with me. Might send to VarSlab for attribution and an explanation from John what this crazy looking "doubling" is? Anyone know what this is called and is it just a normal thing? I think the pics of the obverse speak for themself.
I remember buying this about 3 years ago on the Flea. It was so unusual I bid way over on max bid at the last minute and stole it for less than 60 bucks. I was willing to pay twice what I ended up paying because it was so unusual (and silver was trading a LOT less than today). I really don't care if it's not an error, it's unusual and I'm happy to have it in my collection. I just don't know what it's called.
Some also call this machine doubling or profile doubling. They don't have the value of a true doubled die coin. Still a pretty cool coin.
I was unable to find a match to the doubling on VAMworld. There are quite a few die pairings that fall into the top 100, all of them have irregular reeding. 21' Morgans are a tough year, as there are way to many VAMs. I would first try to figure out if it is a 16 or 17 berries reverse. I think that yours is a 16 berry. There are a few in the 16 berry that have a double profile.
So many scribbles. I have a home for that one if the toning profile adds to the details. Close to the same details. This is the coin I bought for my Birthday, happened to coincide with a couple Jeffersons from pocket change.. This one is a blazer, strong strike. Somewhat Mirrored surface's. I hope to get some photos of the Jeff's tonight.
PCGS did not make note of it in its description. They ignored it so it may be just an anomaly. I believe it is unique and I would enjoy having one, you lucky devil.
Nice pickup. And does PCGS add anything to a label that is not paid for? I am not sure about that - I do know they will not list obvious varieties without paying for the variety attribution. Not sure if this falls into this category or not.
I’m not a VAM collector but a 1921 Morgan with a doubled or shadow effect of Lady Liberty’s profile is known as a VAM-28. Nit sure if that’s what you have or not.
If you want anything extra from PCGS, pay the poll tax man. That's pretty much true of any TPG though. Most times the attribution is a lot more difficult than standard grading.
