...that chatgpt agrees with me. LOL - I have been looking at this quarter since it got posted. I needed a nice with motto coin - so I was also watching a very nice 1877 MS65 (and yes I know what I am about to say) - but the strike seemed a little weak around the breasts - almost flat. Other than that it was very nice, but I decided finally to go with this coin. So then to add some fun to the process I dropped pictures in chatgpt and asked about this coin: One thing I will say: this is a very attractive example of a scarce date. The 1868 quarter had a mintage of only about 29,400 pieces and is considered a semi-key issue within the Seated Liberty quarter series. So I already new the briggs number (not like 1868 has a bunch) - it wanted all kinds of close ups. So I told chatgpt what the variety was and it agreed. What I like about this date is that experts seem to think only 400 to 450 examples survive and it is just considered a semi-key date - so it can be reasonably priced.
I also like this type toning. Once I run into a suitable No Motto replacement the one I have is gone - it is really nice, but just to white.
There’s no such thing as to white. Maybe for you, but I like all natural bright white higher grade coins. I can’t always afford them so I’ll get lower grades but I have two collections of MS-64 or better bright white PCGS slabbed coins.
Nothing wrong with bright white. I have a few really nice ones. BUT when I look at my type set quarters the 1857 just stands out. Various grades - but overall the 1857 MS63 coins stands out(see below). I want a little more toning. So it is one I keep until I get something that seems to mesh better in the set. Seems like I am always going to being tweaking the set. What 2 sets do you have that are blast white MS64?
OHHHH - I did not think of this until after I posted the above. So look at my 2 washington quarters - both are MS66 and only 1 is CAC certified. I love the way that 46 presents itself with the toning. The 41-D is CAC approved and blast white showing more luster than the picture does. Both stay in the set until I find a D mint coin I like better. I really don't look at modern stuff too much.
Great looking coin! I have a couple of seated Liberty's but no pics right now, my only pic is of my potty gal!
Franklin’s Halves (3 to go) and Peace Dollars (1 to go). All of them are PCGS MS-64 or higher. I’ve been looking for that Peace Dollar for years now and it can’t seem to find the right one. I day I will.
That is a veeery nice example of a scarce quarter. Congratulations! Amazing detail - you can clearly see the double strands of her head band. I happen to have a low grade example of her west coast cousin.
