i have finally completed my Year of the Six emperors collection with Gordian II Africanus. I made a lowball offer to a dealer, not expecting it would be accepted AT ALL, went to bed, and I woke up to find he agreed! So here he is:

Gordian II, 1st – 22nd April 238 A.D. Silver Denarius April 238 A.D., 2.35 g. Very Rare. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust r. Virtus standing l., resting on shield and holding reverted spear. Reference: C 14. RIC 3. Pedigree: Ex CGB sale 34, 2008, 653.

It was still pretty expensive, but less than i expected to pay.

And here's the other guys from my collection from 238AD (i want to upgrade a few of these eventually):

That is a nice one. How many people have a set like this where the GII is the best looker?

It reflects how I've changed as a collector. When I first started collecting, I just needed to fill the holes in my collection. Now I've become a bit more demanding in terms of style and quality. None of my coins is perfect, but I try to get something decent within budget.

Yes, very happy to still be on the journey. Next up - maybe Antinous. I've been looking for a nice big provincial AE of his for ages - the trouble is, almost all of them are tooled and smoothed.

    That is an awsome group.
I don't recall the thread I mentioned that I'd only seen one Gordian I in hand before (wasn't mine). And was amazed at how rare they actually are.
Great job, hell of an accomplishment.

I'd be interested to know what "very rare" really means here. How many of these coins are there in the world? A thousand? A few hundred?

I'd guess a few hundred but all rare means is more people want one than can have one. There are coins that are the only one that exists and relatively few people want one so they don't get the hype of a Gordian AFR. There are more people trying to get one coin per emperor than there are GII coins so they are 'rare'.

I don't know of anyone else that has a Year of Six Emperors set - not only that, but your set is of an extremely high quality. Kudos to you sir!
