Looks like a 1803 Large cent with a large date. I can’t tell if the 1 is blunt or pointed but I’m going either way pointed from your photo. Also difficult to tell from the photo but I believe it to be the large fraction variety. I would grade this as a G-4 and that's a $175.00 coin if I’m not mistaken. Very nice and the detail looks fairly clear but the photos are a little blurry. Hope I’m correct and I doubt it’s the small fraction variety.
Obverse surface looks corroded and scratched. They'll overlook some stuff on coins this old but I don't think they would on this one.
surfaces are definitely not as smooth and nice as photo grade coins but I am not trying to get the coin graded and for $50 I think I am ok price wise.
Then don't ask for an opinion. It's my opinion that the obverse and the net grade is not G-04. I am not debating my opinion.
you are free to voice your opinion but I don't have to agree with it. Go look on e-bay at all the G-4 graded coins and see what I am talking about.
You asked if I thought it will make G-04. I said no, and you are arguing about what I said. EBay has too many integrity problems to take seriously anymore. I agree with Vess 1. And if the surface is corroded, it would grade Details AG-03.
The sharpness is around Good-4, but the surfaces have too much roughness to hold the grade. I think the net grade will be AG-3.
and that's a fair comment. G-4 sharpness is probably what I should have asked in the first place. For $50 I don't think you can find many coins of that year that would straight grade G-4 or better.
E-bay doesn't grade the coins on their site so integrity problems don't apply in this case. I should have said G-4 sharpness or detail left on the coin.
I don't think so. Click on the PCGS image and enlarge it. On that G4 example you can still see the outline of the shirt and the indention for the fold in the shirt. There's still a deep groove below the eye. You have a couple clear defined lines of hair detail on the top of the head. The ribbon is more defined. While faint it isn't one big blob. Look at the lines left in the hair on the shoulder. I'm not an expert on grading them but using the chart for comparison, at least that G4 has more sharpness than yours. When grading at these levels all these details matter.
