It took me a while but finally scratched another off my want list; A Nerva denarius. Nerva Denarius. IMP NERVA CAES AVG PM TR P COS III PP, laureate head right / FORTVNA PR, Fortuna seated left, holding corn ears & scepter. RIC 17, RSC 79, BMC 41 It was an upgrade from this guy: Also got a cheap FH Feel free to share any coins of Nerva.............. or any FH
@randygeki I'm jealous. That's a sweet Nerva. I love the reverse. You have a good eye for these things. Although it's worn, it's so in a very attractive way and has plenty of eye appeal. I would gladly open my hands and welcome a coin like that into my collection. I don't have one yet, but hopefully soon. I have a feeling 2017 shall not pass without sweet Nerva in my hands. I shall press the issue and spend coin enough to make it so.
No new Nerva here and I'm not sure if I showed this FH or not. In any event I have a question. RIC lists this twice on page 497 (Cyzicus) numbers 92 and 93A according to the headgear and beard. What do you see here? The choices are beard with bare head and no beard with pointed cap. Both are very common C2. There is 93 with cap but a rosette diadem obverse rated S but this is the common pearl diadem style. The question is, how many people care. Would you rather have a carce variation or a slightly nicer specimen of the common type. Do you feel any need to have all three or are you just not a flyspeck level student? Is the answer different if the subject is not a Falling Horseman but something 'better' in your book? Do you want all the Caesar elephant variations, the set of Augustus Gaius and Lucius shields and ladles or a hundred minor variations of something? Whichever answer - what drives you to this decision?
Nice upgrade randygeki, especially the portrait, it looks like your As of Nerva has been through a fire or something, great step up. I haven't got a big collection of Nerva only a Dupondius from 96 AD and an AS from 97 AD.
Very Nice denarius!!! Over the past year I have been trying to add a few 'new' coins of Nerva realizing that I only had one very worn denarius purchased back in the '90's.....so I added a bronze (dupondius) and a silver up-grade to keep him company
Great upgrade! That is a great coin, congrats! I have a Dupondius... Roman Empire Nerva 96-98 CE AE Dupondius LIBERTAS PVBLICA Ex: the @TIF Collection
Thanks all, and great coins. My Nerva isn't the best, but the best for what I was willing to pay. I now have a denarius of every emperor between Vespasian to Maximinus I (with exception of those between Commodus to Septimius). It looks to me like there's a dot before SMKS. Cyzikus 96 is listed on Danes spread sheet as; no beard, Phrygian helmet, reaching, Dot SMKS in ex. Because it's posted by you, I'm wondering if there's something else I'm missing as well. To answer part of your question, I'd care to have all 3, if I had 1. Pinning down why I like variants and have over 60 FH (a handful compared to some other collectors ) is not so easy for me to answer with out delving into a long post on the psychology of collecting. This is rated r5, but almost not worth the $15 I spent on it. This one is an unlisted variant headwear These 2 are more common, but also nicer This one is some what rare, in decent condition which I got at a reasonable price.
Hi Sallent, not related to this post - on your Ptolemy Drachm, was there a seam on the side? I am just trying to make sure these one were made without a seam on the edge. thanks
Here's mine. I picked it out of a lot of uncleaned coins. Pretty rough shape, but I really like the obverse portrait: Bronze As Rome mint, A.D. 97 Obv: IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P Rev: AEQVITAS AVGVST - Aquitas, standing, facing left, holding scales and cornucopiae, between S and C RIC 77 26x23mm, 11.4g.
You think yours is in rough shape. Here is one I got out of a lot of uncleaned coins a few years back. Now this is rough:
