Would you buy the U.S. 2026 Uncirculated mint set just to get the new 2026 penny?

The Lincoln cent is now obviously only being produced in special collectors editions, and is in the official mint sets. The new 2026 penny features the 1776-2026 dates on the obverse, which did not appear on 1976 penny. Currently on Ebay, to get the complete P&D uncirculated mint set, it is $183. For those die hard fans of Lincoln cent collecting, who want to update their folders/albums, would you purchase the set for this reason?

Currently the subscription for these at the mint is unavailable, but there will be a chance to purchase when they go on sale June 30th at noon ET, price of $124.50.

I already have a couple of them on subscription, but if not, I would be on trying to get them when they go on sale. That will likely be difficult as a lot of others will be doing the same thing.

If I did not have the subscription and did not get any when they go on sale, I would give it some time for the secondary market to work through and hope the prices drop.

I ended my proof/mint purchases in 2025. I'm satisfied with what I have and will no longer add to the 'glut'. Besides, the price for base metal sets is beyond astronomical......

 

Me too, but a few years earlier. My first US Mint purchase was 1959. They got real greedy.

Not this guy. Might take a few decades but I'll get it much cheaper than the greedy mint's opening.

 

Am I buying the uncirculated set just to get those pennies? No. But I was already buying it to fill albums with the other coins in it. So the pennies are just a nice bonus to something I was already going to buy anyway. (Besides, of all the Lincoln cents I don't yet have, these will still be the cheapest.)

I don't disagree that the Mint is charging too much for them, but in the secondary market I guarantee you they'll cost even more than that.

Its a $125 dollars for the whole P&D mint set, but The penny is no longer around, so that set is the only way to get it.
Honestly I would also not spend that money just to get a penny out of that set, but with those Lincoln Cent lovers, you never know.

Bravo! It’s great that you are keeping up with the made for circulation collections. I gave up on that when I was a kid.

I’m not so sure about the future value of these sets in the long term. Many modern sets have had a brief period of popularity or market promotion only to fall into the market value dust bin as collectors and investors move on to the next craze.

In the old days you usually got hurt in the secondary market because the mint issue prices were fairly modest. Now the mint buries you from the beginning. The buyer has to hope that lots of people will be willing to pay big prices for common base metal coins.
