1 grading ancients is subjective at best and inappropriate.
2 If you want a slabbed coin you can buy raw a raw coin and slab it yourself.
3 NGC do not authenticate an ancient coin as genuine. Read the small print on their website.
4 Don't be offended by stevex6 he is our ancient mascot and much loved.
5 Search the forum for slabbed coins and see the arguments, for and against.
6 Stick around, you may learn a lot.
7 Ancients are fun, fun, fun.

Aaaaah that makes sense, i know a guy or 2, that would piss me off if i didnt know him. You just hafta let it slide, because thats steve, i get it now.
I did not know NGC doesnt stand behind the Authenticity guarantee, thats BS, and i can see why you guys dont do plastic. That one fact alone turns me off from them

The latter I'm afraid. Unlike modern coins struck from hubbed dies, ancient coins are struck from individually hand-engraved dies. Of course there are slight but measurable variations such as the spacing difference you've noticed. It would be astonishing were that not the case.

I find the best way to ID ancients is to either buy a book especially if a certain area interests you. Or online sites like Wildwinds, CoinProject, ACSearch, even auction sites sometimes have good info. like CNG, Heritage and many others.

Asking here is not a problem, there are many people that can help but you may have to wait a bit.

As far as grading goes (NGC) I have no qualms about it. Its not my money and I'm not going to judge someone on how they spend it. But once you know how to grade and determine authenticity on your own, its much better and cheaper.

The Wild winds site, for a noob such as myself was a tough row to hoe. I looked for atleast an hour, until i stumbled acrossed the anonna reverse, but even then i wasnt sure i had it. Now i hafta go look up anonna and read why shes even on the coin.
Ancient collecting is too much work!:dead:

You guys are probably gonna hate this, but i sell coins & buy ancients (once a blue moon) to sell @ a flea market (which opens back up Saturday) i do this to supplement my income so i can afford coins. I was actually thinking about keeping this one, which is the reason why i came crawling to you guys. To see what i even had

Its graded AU btw, and i like the looks of it

@heavycam.monstervam ancients are a world away from modern coins, you have to throw the modern rule book out of the window.

I encourage you to stick around, it can be tough when you start out, it an be incredibly rewarding when the penny drops.

I don't see any problems with it. I sold most of my US modern coins and switched to ancients, I still pick up a few moderns here and there. I think a few members here do that to.

Carthago Does this look infected to you?

A fun fact: AU isn't a real term used in mainstream ancient coin collecting. Another reason NGC sucks.

Ok, so........ Does the buck stop at XF then?? Wait, is that the highest grade?? I noticed a few VF/XF guesses

    This is all quite interesting
