It does not look obvious to me that it an S underneath that D mark. By the photos, it looks more like the D making a shadow from its upraised surface, creating the effect that seems to look like the top of an S. Its not conclusive in my opinion. Though I will note that the vertical side of the D is curved, but it could be wear. The coin has scratches everywhere. Hope that helps.
The only way to confirm one is position and any remaining die markers. the coin has seen it's fair share of circulation. There are many dings in the area, I say it's not worth the effort.
I have about 20 of them that are similar. Trying to get some idea of indicators to watch for. Thanks for the feedback. Please throw any more observations that you may have.
It keeps me from going insane. My collection is complete with exception of very rare issues. I have all the nickels from 1883 to date. This sort of thing I need to stay active.
