I'm waiting for my clashed PL to arrive then it's off to ANACS with 5 Morgans. Dan, if you haven't struck this batch of clashers yet a double clash with rotation would be wonderful! Hint.. hint...
It's been fun looking at all the pictures here. I only have one Dan Carr coin, bought back in the day. IIRC it was an early use of the matte finish for these. He was set up a show and I pretty much begged to buy it. He said he wasn't intending to sell it then, but use it to show the finish. I've got the original flip stashed somewhere, but ended up sending it to ANACS for entombment. So, how do I figure out the value on this one (other than the obvious bullion content)? (edited to add: not selling, just curious)
Did anybody notice that Coin World has Mr. Carr listed as "Donald Carr"... http://www.dc-coin.com/2001apolloastronautgoldendollarprototypebrassprooflike81grams-1.aspx
Yep, they did it in bold font, on the front page, two different issues weeks apart. But they've run several nice articles since then (with name correct).
Value on something like that is hard to tell. You could list it on eBay and get a significantly different price each time. 21 of those were minted (satin finish). The production totals web page also states (for the 2009 Amero issues in general): "Some were given a post-strike bead-blasted & burnished matte finish.". I do not know how many of that one were given the post-strike matte finish, but it was a fairly small number.
Cool! I was really happy you sold it to me. It was at Baltimore, I'm guessing Spring, or more likely Summer, as we moved in 2009 (and IIRC I pestered you on the PCGS forum message board a bit too--can't figure out how to search the pm section with the upgrade but oh well). It was a perfect addition as I'm a fan of mythological creatures and was trying to accumulate a small bit of gold at the time--my 'cool bullion' stuff has mostly been converted to Japanese /Albanian coins and other types of medals by now, but the Amero remains a keeper--and if I ever did that pesky 'box of 20' thing, it would be in it. Needless to say I won't be trying it on eBay anytime soon.
Got the .gif of my 2016 Knights of the Coin Table hologram version back from @messydesk today. If you have one you really need to send it to him as all hologram patterns are slightly different! It looks like the wizard is a Highlander immortal that just cut another immortal's head off and is receiving The Quickining! So cool I just don't have the words
Cascade, I was just about to post a picture of my KOTCT 2016 medal. I'm glad you beat me to it. That looks amazing.
Glad you like the GIF! I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. I had to rehearse the lighting path a couple times. The section of the hologram that shows up and its color are a function of not only the position of the light around the coin, but also the height of the light. The magnitude of first derivative of the color (itself a vector) with respect to the lighting vector tends to be either large or zero (i.e., the color is either volatile or not there at all), so I needed to use 15 pictures instead of the usual 6 to capture any sense of a gradual change.
Is that scientific speak for it took a little extra effort I don't know exactly what I was expecting, I didn't even know if it would turn out well at all, but I do know you surpassed it in every way. Its beyond amazing. Thanks man.
