What do you believe the assigned NGC grade should be ??? Also, who is on the reverse of this coin? I cannot find a match 4 it, though being a novice, i may not be looking in the right places. Thx 4 playing
I have purchased very few Ancients in a slab. Those that I purchased, I removed from the slab. Grades are for moderns, and truly do not reflect the condition for Ancients. I never even considered or looked at the grade numbers when I purchased my few Ancients in a slab. They are irrelevant. I do not focus on Roman Empire, so I am sorry I cannot help you with the denarius' attribution.
Oh, and i realize you guys dont avidly collect slabbed ancient coins. I think its rather ironic though, that slabbed ancients usually carry a larger price tag than their non-slabbed counter-parts. I did an ancient coin GtG about 2 years ago, and there were a few collectors, who were curious what Anacs graded the coin. I learned alot too !!! In any event, this thread is more about trying to ID the reverse (and possible valuation) than grade. Just thought it be more fun that way
Uh oh... you may have opened up a can of worms heavycam... I believe the reverse is PM TR P XV COS III P P, Anonna seated left holding corn ears over a modish at foot & cornucopia
Wow, we have a US coin collector acting biggity and wanting help ... oh, and thinking that our coins would be worth way more if we'd just slab 'em all!! Yah, we're ancient collectors, so we're super cool ...
Beautiful coin though - I like the Caracalla coins that can be dated to a specific year - if I'm right in my attribution, this would be from 212 AD
Did you know that you can buy a pretty cool 2000 year old coin for about $50? => if not, you should stop buying your Granny-bait and start buying some sweet history (and like "now" => you're wasting your money on "modern" coins)
It's the slab - I know it's a common game in the other forums to guess the grade, but mention of slabs in the ancients section opens the debate about stabbing or not (and some have strong feelings about it).
Ahhh gotcha, i didnt come to offend you, oh smaug, the unnecessibly wealthy, i merely wanted to gaze upon your magnificence, to see, if you really were as great as the old tales say- i did not believe them.... I am on the slab side of the fence obviously. I dont pay 4 it, just buy already slabbed material, like this coin- heres why- raw, this coin is worth what $20-$30? Slabbed , its all the sudden worth what (?) $75-$100? I believe i am getting the MOST bang 4 my buck buying pre - slabbed PLUS the coin stays protected for many many moons. If that pisses you guys off, well, better to b pissed off , than pissed on
It's highly unlikely that any of the collectors of ancients who frequent this site are offended by this thread. What IS highly likely is that you're unlikely to get any responses that attempt to guess the grade assigned to this coin by the grading company. To the best of my recollection, in the past five years on this site, among thousands of threads and tens of thousands of posts, there has never been a thread in which ancient collectors are asked to "guess the grade" of a slabbed coin. There's a reason for this: serious collectors of ancient coins purchase the coin, not the grade/slab. Even those on this site who purchase slabbed ancients have the experience to choose coins based on their own evaluation of the coin's condition. There's certainly a market for slabbed ancients -- it's understandable that a novice collector would feel more comfortable with the authority and implied (but not guaranteed) authenticity that comes with a slabbed ancient, but most of the collectors here are beyond the novice phase of collecting. For speculators, slabbed ancients allow you to sell a $20 coin for $50, increasing your profit. But again, overpaying for a coin simply because it's been slabbed isn't a generally discussed topic here. You're not being insulted -- there's no reason for you to respond as you did above -- it's just that this isn't the forum for guessing games about a slabbed ancient's grade.
Depends on how old the slab is, early ones had a grade, new ones do surface/strike. For fun, just gonna say surface 3, strike 4...
Ok, you guys answered my question about the reverse thank you! I am out of my wheel house here, what is this coin worth?? I cant find a comparable coin ANYWHERE on the net, there isnt a single coin out there that matches this one. Can anybody produce one? The obverse is easy to find, finding the same obverse with THIS reverse has been frustrating. I wonder if this is a rare bird i have here??
