Magnifying Glass

I too the kids to Lake Placid this past weekend, and in town there was a nick-knack store that seems to collect things that people leave when they die. One of the things they sold (aside from a 1913 pay phone, and hand cranked record player and hundreds of Indian head pennies) are antique magnifying glasses. They are made of brass, some of them in cases. The glass is awesome. I've looked up and down for a decent magnifying glasses and then I finally stumble on these.

I picked one up, glass fitted into genuine brass, and along with a matching letter opener, they cost me $24.96. I can actually see my Mercury Dimes now.

Sounds like a real nice find Ruben! Sounds like it was a good trip with the Kids. I'm originally from North of Syracuse so I know how nice Northern NY can be.

Love to see a piture of the glass. Did you get any good IHP's from the group?

Congrads on finding them. How do you know it's genuine Brass? Could be a counterfeit Brass and a counterfeit glass. then there is the letter opener. Is it a left handed or right handed one? :goofer:
Does the glass magnify on both sides?
All just joking of course.

 

Yeah - it is kind of hard for people to really understand the excitement of finding this particular glass. I'll need to get a photo or two up. But this kind of instrument is very hard to find today. The glass is extremely smooth, clear and accurate. Even with a casual use you can immediately see the pores in the skin of your hand.

I let a nice B&L antique desk top get away a while back the was about the same size. I'm still kicking myself. When you see a nice piece of glass it's like looking at a proof ASE that just came from the mint - you know it is the real deal.

 

Hmmm. I think I bought a similar one at a flea market while I was working in England a couple of years ago. Nice brownish brass handle and rim with heavy glass about 4" across. It's heavy. Kind of like a big Sherlock Holmes thing. I bought that when I was in non-coin-collector mode. I'm going to dig that out tonight - if I can find it!!! Thanks for the POST!!!

 

that is exactly what I was thinking when I wrote the previous post. It is just like what you would imagine Sherlock Holmes would use.

HEY, those are really great. Possibly more valuable than some of the coins your looking at. I like those handles. As with any antique I hope you don't clean the handles. Of course clean the glass. Just don't use sandpaper.

Ruben, I looked at several older/antique magnifying glasses in local antique shops and the cheapest was $65 with others going for more than double that price. You may have found a real bargain.

 

Well, there were two more of them there when I left Lake Placid.

Did you ever see photo's of Lake Placid in summer?

Must say coffee stains not withstanding those are NICE! Great find. What would you say the magnification is?
